Does anyone have any information on Capt. Ron Gillman?
He was, I understand, one of BEA’s first pilots and wrote a book called “From Croydon to Concorde”.
Does anyone know more?

As sopwithpup posted once over 13 years ago I suspect the chances of him/her still visiting the forum are pretty much zero.

Hi, I’m a book publisher and I’m trying to get in touch with the family of Captain Gilman. Might anyone be able to help? I wonder if sopwithpup above might still be on here? Thanks for any help.

Great to see Captain Gilman’s thread re-ignited.
A couple more archive films with which Capt. Gilman was connected, Low Level Navigation films made during the latter part of his RAF career, when he headed the RAF Film Unit at Benson….

Attached below are ‘Flight’ cuttings on Gilman’s role in creating the original Vintage Aeroplane Club. As the current Vintage Aircraft Club chairman, I am deeply honoured to be flying in his slipstream, sixty years on!

Thanks Chitts,
That’s a must see video for all us old Northern Aircraft Preservation Society members as the Avian is G-ABEE which was part of the collection for many years.
Now in South Australia and intended for a rebuild according to this thread from a while back?

Ron Gilman
I knew Ron Gilman when we moved to Dittisham, near Datmouth in 1986.
He had retired by then.
He wrote the book mentioned “From Croydon to Concorde” and also wrote “The Shiphunters” about his experience in WW2 flying Blenheim bombers from Malta. I have given a copy of this book to Malta’s War Museum.
He never mentioned these books or his experiences – I only found about them when I read his obituary in the Telegraph.
If you want to find a copy of either book you can do so via Amazon or abebooks.com
Sadly, Ron died when he was still quite young and his ashes are in St George’s Church in Dittisham as far as I can remember. They are in a bed to the left of the main church door. The Church Warden is Mrs Sjoberg – she will know – we moved from Dittisham in 1996 and Ron had died before then.
I remember his widow, Doreen, saying to me once “He was some kind of guy”.

He died some years back
His book has quite a lot of Air traffic history in it. And includes a picture of ‘Nephigraph pole’.
Never saw one in real life!

I’ve got a copy somewhere – did you want to know about the book?
Thanks James,
His writing style looked so entertaining, I’ve just ordered a second-hand copy – hopefully my Christmas reading!!
