Captured Spitfire from a German propaganda film?
The Daily Mail article about the Turkish Focke Wulfs got me wondering. One of the images is a rather squashed shot showing an Fw-190 and a Spitfire. The roundels look wrong, as does the fin flash, well, for 1941 anyway. The G-Y (or G-X) codes don’t really ring true either. Not only that, but the whole thing looks like a frame from a film. Could this be a captured and repainted Spit used for German propaganda film purposes?

Cheers,
Matt

The film of this Spitfire being shot down while attacking German bombers IIRC was discussed in the forum before now…

e.g. here – http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?112136-Spitfire-Shootdown-Footage-Query&highlight=captured+AND+spitfire

And the film….

I believe that this is a captured Spitfire that has been initially repainted in German markings in the appropriate positions with wing markings suitably closer to the aircraft centre line. I would suggest that for propaganda reasons it has subsequently been repainted with RAF wing rounders to cover the German crosses in the German position.

I did a quick search on the Getty site for this image. The description actually says that it is a Hurricane…. so far for accurate captions in databases.
