car battery conditioners/chargers

Anybody have any recommendations ??
A friend of mine does not use her car very often and only short journeys !
So she sometimes has a flat battery.
Prefer one that ‘plugs in’ rather than using ‘croc’ clips on battery.

I’ve never ever considered how tractor engines work….but I assumed the glow plugs need to be “Glowed”………..which of course takes power?

only for between 10 – 30 secs depending on ambient temp, after that it is just the fuel shut off solenoid, radio and lights etc as required.
Glow plugs are just for starting and assisting engine running for a few seconds after start.

cheers baz

Aye, the Alt gives 14.5 but the ignition system (When running) takes a lot of it.

Thanks guys
Yes I checked for a drain fault…there was a radio fault which was draining the battery…I fixed that and fully charged the batt, the car was then ok for 6 weeks.
The drain originally was 0.11 amps, after fixing radio connection fault it was down to 0.01 amp (less than my car which is 0.04 !).
I think she just does not do enough miles to ‘top up’ the battery (alternator chucks out 14.5 volts when required).
B130 is the Oxford charger very simple ? I have also been recommended the Ctek xs3600 which has no settings to adjust (ie completely ‘auto’)…she is not tech minded so trying to keep simple and foolproof.

regards baz

It actually needs a full charge from a proper charger. 24 hour job. The alternator can only get you to about 75% full (Which is plenty if you use it daily). I used to believe that a long run on a car (2 hours or so) would fully charge a battery, I mentioned it in a car forum and “Was put right”.
So, on a 75% charge, leaving it for a week or so….the clock and alarm will drain it. If she has an old banger with no alarm, then there is a short somewhere.

This why you should go fo the Oxford, it will start at full charge then switch
over to maintain charge automaticly.

i agree

Use a solar charger when it is left in the airport car park, depends on where you live though doesn’t it!:D

I would have to say this is the way to go i live in australia so there might be different weather patterns but we’v got a ford sprint that hasn’t been started for about 3yrs sitting the shed hooked up to a solar panel and it still starts without jumpleads or any new batterys in the long run this would be the better option

hope that helps:cool:

Go for the Oxford charger, it can be wired to the car and will maintain a charge for months, I have one on my bike at the moment.
