seriously, what do these actually do to normal field operations when required. how would it effect braking, steering turning circles etc etc ?

Those things guarantee a BIIIG bounce if your landing is abit on the fast and heavy side. Mind you they probably knock so much of the cruise speed that cruise and landing speed are the same.
