Condolences to the bereaved.

The M5 is notoriously bad as it has a lot of holiday traffic, people hauling caravans (they only get out a couple of times a year), some with kids shouting in the back, others on their one motorway trip a year, etc.

Sad fact, but over the weekend (Fri-Sun), there are fewer cars on the road, but more congestion and accidents, the number of lane hogs increases exponentially!

I too travel on this road when going to see my son in Bodmin, 3 or 4 times a year and have done for quite a number of years. I have yet to travel on it without seeing an accident, and this is in daylight and mainly in good visibility weather.I often wonder what the cause is,

Jim.

I drive from J14 (Falfield) to Exeter J29 and back every day for work. If I was on a certain duty on Friday I would have passed J25 at about the same time as it happened. Last Friday evening I did exactly that, and passed J25 about 20:30. Very sobering.

I work in Bridgwater, just down the motorway from where it happened. We had horrendous weather yesterday, lots of rain leading to flash flooding and part of the town wall along the river Parrett gave way leading to problems with flooding in town. The rain was followed by heavy fog all around the area. I went outside around the time it happened and the fog was really thick, visibility about 15 yards under our village street lighting. I personally think the firework distraction theory is is misleading as it was so foggy I dont think they would have shown up much. It was more likely the fog and surface water. At the end of the day at least seven people have lost their lives are the toll is expected to rise, there are still vehicles to examine that had people inside them. The cause won’t matter to them. My wife’s cousin is a nurse at Yeovil hospital. They had over thirty injured taken there for treatment. They put their emergency training and plans into action and things worked as smoothly as they possibly could for the circumstances. Thankfully most of the injured have been discharged and the rest are stable. Musgrove Park hospital in Taunton took the more seriously injured as it is nearer. I am selfishly hoping that no-one I know or work with has been involved or lost anyone.
My thoughts are with the families of those involved.

I spend a lot of time on that road. Fortunatly at the time I was stuck in the traffic caused by another accident else where. I see an accident every day. I dont mean to sound insensitive but its just the way it is on the roads. Condolences to the berieved and I hope no forum members or their loved ones were involved.

Indeed, RIP. Very very sad.

I pal of mine lives near there, says that you could see a fireworks display from the M/way. Add that to the patchy fog that witnesses have described…..

Seven dead.

About the same as every other day on UK roads, except for once they were all in the same place.

When we were outside doing fireworks and bonfire last night it was really foggy down here, so thats the most likely cause IMO.
