Carpetbagging Memorial

Happened to pass a memorial while out yesterday that raised my interest, you may already be aware of it but a bit of digging came up with this link, photos and some interesting info.

The Thor Pads are on private property as far as I know, I had permission to be there but. If you walk north up the peritrack at the west of the airfield which is a public footpath you can get some relly good views of the pads from there. there is a track (HERE) down to the pads from the peritrack about halfway up (old E/W runway) there is no sign saying private but it isn’t on my o/s map as a footpath either so I guess it is a farm access track.

what’s the situation regarding access to the old pads, just wander over if there is the opportunity or contact the museum? The more I’m reading the more I want to pop back for a visit

The excellent ‘Carpetbaggers’ museum at Harrington airfield is, I think one of Northamptonshire’s best-kept aviation secrets.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ihpics/1217786738/sizes/o/ seems to show it but as far as I can make out it says

‘THE UNITED STATES 8th AIR FORCE
801st/492nd BOMBARDMENT GROUP (h)?
Flew clandestine night missions from this secret airfield during world war two in black B-24 Liberator bombers
dropping munitions and supplies to underground resistance fighters in nazi occupied Europe
They parachuted and landed OSS agents into Belgium, Denmark, France, The Netherlands, Norway and Germany.
They also flew night bombing missions.
208 American aircrew gave their lives flying from this airfield’

Not 100% sure of what it says in the brackets but that is my best guess.
