Carvair

Does anyone have a picture of the flight deck of the Aviation Traders Carvair? I believe there were only about 21 made. One carcass can be seen in on Google Earth in northern Alaska at 67°1’16.63″N 146°31’53.51″W. I saw an operational one years ago at Rand Airport in South Africa when I was learning to fly.

Not sure about the full history of the control line carvair, i bought it from the wife of Laurie Rowe, an ex BAF Carvair pilot who had sadly passed away and the family were selling off some of his things. I have been told it was made by a couple of guys who ran a model shop in Leigh on Sea (maybe it was Wings and Wheels?) The carvair was hanging from Laurie`s dining room ceiling, suspended by a trouser belt. I had to hire a van to get it home as it is a one piece model! I also bought a cylinder head, tyre and the Carvair prop that had been standing in his garden, unfortunately some theiving g*its had sawn one of the blades off one night and made off with it………….Martin

Is that control line Carvair model the one built in the 60’s and once allegedly owned by a Southend Councillor. I think it was also displayed in John Creasey’s furnitiure shop at one time?

Brings back memories. I learnt to fly at Southend Airport in 1976 and well remember the Carvairs obscuring the apron in smoke on startup. Also it was not uncommon to see one on final with an engine shutdown. Apparently the engines did not cope well with the very short sectors being flown. They were run by British Air Ferries and given names. I can recall Big John and Fat Annie. Anyone know the others?

Brought back great memories of that wonderful distinctive sound and even had the tyre squeal that seemed to be a characteristic of almost every Carvair landing run.
The start up seemed less spectacular than I remember at Southend – a lot less smoke and no sign of the flames that used to have mums and dads on the viewing terrace worried as they thought it was the start of a fire.

Looks like they just cut the cockpit out and rebuilt it into the bubble? I have bought the book “The ATL-98 CARVAIR: A Comprehensive History Of The Aircraft And All 21 Airframes” from Ian Allan Publishing if anyone is interested, good price.

Here’s one of 9Q-CTI taken near Lanseria Johannesburg sometime in the mid nineties. Not my picture – its taken by Mark Wolhuter – I was on the flight deck at the time and spent a week flying with the aeroplane in the DRC some months later – a real adventure. I have a partial panel shot somewhere amongst my slides as well as some photos taken during ops.

Carvair

Eastern Provincial Airways in Canada had three. CF-EPW shown here in Gander.
One had a hard landing in Labrador and two were sold back to English interests.

The 747 under the tail is F-BPVD in Gander with a bomb scare on 8 September 1972.

Patrick used to pop in here occasionally. He spent years trying to get the book published.

There’s a glowing review towards the bottom of this thread.

They always got my attention when I was growing up near Southend and they regularly thundered overhead.:)

Similarly in Liverpool in the 1960s when Aer Lingus used them. The engine note always seemed a little bit heavier and louder that the standard DC-4s and C-54s of the day: were they re-engined, or did the engines just have to work a bit harder?

This is the Carvair in South Africa. I doubt if it is still flying.
