Cash more important than preserved historic aircraft in National Musea?

So a Spitfire is worth a lot of money. So it doesn’t matter if it has a historical value for a country other than the UK. SO if you wave your wallet and shove some bits of scrap aircraft into the general direction of the poor museum involved then there is no other way but to get it out, rip it to bits, replace what’s necessary (destroying some orginality here and there) and get if flying. So, if I give enough money to the long suffering RAF Museum to take Halifax W1048 off their hands so that it can finally be restored in Holland (not exactly where it would belong, but who cares) that would be a win win situation irrespective of the few UK Halifax afficionados would be crying at the gate near Harwich when the lowloaders depart for the Hook?

The result? Museums with wrecked airframes of dubious provenance, but with lots of cash (just a guess) and several squadrons of Spitfire IX’s at airshows where bored people stay away from en masse.

I like it!!

Seriously, this is a good discussion. Let’s take it further (without teddies or hadbags) to see what good this will do to preservation.

So, do we need squadrons of Mk IX Spitfires in the air, or is diversity a better option. And what rights do National Museums have. Should they be protected or crucified for selling valuable airframes?
Cheers

Cees

They do by claiming that Flying Legends should be a free event !!!!

Yes perhaps but they will be the same type of people who tell me my aeroplane is the wrong colour/markings too small/ funny looking spitfire etc. 😡

And are therefore, Tosspots.

Who cares about that Spitfire. There is a good reason it went, and the entire deal it went for isn’t known. If it only went for that derelict Firefly it should be a lousy deal, but it didn’t. As there are still more than 1 of that type left in Holland the prospect of seeing a Firefly in 5 years or so to me is well worth loosing a Spitfire. Liking it is something else, and all th UK based members who don’t see the problem should cry havoc if some rich Japanese should buy PO-S from the RAF Museum. BW Roger

Well I have to agree with Cees a bit. The museum is just half full of crap.
They recently got a Saab Viggen that flew in and they are letting it rot away outside. Now I understand why. The rest of the indoor military items are also in bad shape. I have to cry when I see the B-25 cockpit.
The sale of the Spitfire really saddens me.
If it’s not for the money, give it to me, I can arrange plenty of space for a new museum.

Happen to think that FHC’s approach is superb – restore it exactly to stock c/w correct AID stamps, radios, guns etc – paint it accurately then let it weather in.

Just because FHC has money is no reason to knock it – so has TFC – but I dont hear anyone complaining at DX that SG ‘has too much money’ as his aeroplanes scream overhead!

We could get the Halifax rebuilt by Redbull.

Not sure if the paint job would be authentic though.

Civil enough?

The sad fact is Cees, is in this day and age, and in my personal experience, as soon as you have Mk9 or any Mk Spitfire, you talk serious money, and that clouds everyones judgements. Collecting policies and common sense, and sometime morals, go out of the window when hard cash is being thrown about………

Tim

Threu, but why not paint a Spit in other colours then the dull camouflage that most of them are in. There are so many (RAF) colour scemes.

One good example of money being throw, is Flying Heritage Collection. Where money is no problem what so ever. Every rare type of aircraft is there.

Is this a good case of restoring artefacts?

How about flogging off all the Mk IXs and rebuild the Halifax back in the air and keep it here. That would work.

I do think the collecting policy of the Aviodrome is a strange one. On one hand stating that they are going for a civel and Dutch themed type of collection. And then get a Saab Viggen. Also what will happen with the Beech 18, its now camouflaged. Do they repaint it ore sell it on. At the moment its sitting out side.
