Cat’s can walk along the top of fences, dogs can’t.

Sayings by Terry Pratchett
In ancient Egypt cats were worshipped as gods. Cats have not forgotten this.
Dogs have Masters. Cats have staff.
Humans, eh? Think they’re lords of creation. Not like us cats. We *know* we are. Ever see a cat feed a human? Case proven.

Having had both dogs and cats separately and at the same time, cats have the edge every time.
Within a domestic situation no matter what breed of dog or how apparently tough, the cat invariably finishes up boss.
To those who say you can train a dog to do all manner of things, while you can only train a cat to do what is agreeable to the cat, for me that proves the superior intelligence of the cat.

It’s like asking if an apple is better than an orange!
They both have their strengths and weaknesses, positives and negatives.
Cats can fend for themselves quite easily for extended periods – expert killers.
Dogs can be great companions.
Cats don’t need walks every day.
Cats look after themselves- daily washes, etc.
Dogs are alert 24/7 and make great burglar/postman alarms, and are fine deterrents.
Cats are independent, and don’t feel the need to be part of a pack.
A dog would attack a burglar and defend you, but would eat you if you were murdered.
A cat is less costly to care for than a dog – vet bills, food etc.

I was half expecting a thread about rain…….
Yes but they are equal then, both making you wet.

Dogs are better as they can’t get into our garden to crap in it or bother our guinea pigs. Cats however do get in to our garden and treat it as their lavatory. Some deterrence is required. Humane or otherwise.
Cats. Pets for lazy owners.
I’ll counter that claim.
Cats poo in the neighbours garden and hide it. Dogs poo in their own garden right where you will probably step.

As with all “best” questions…there is no clear answer.
It depends on what you need.
If you’re gone a lot and need a pet for minimal interaction who can look after itself…cat.
Want something that gives you more attention…but at the cost of more attention…dog.

Cats don’t have owners…..they have staff! 😉

Dogs… because cats are dumb… Dogs can be trained to sniff out cancer, cats can be trained to crap in a box.

I like the sound of a Megablaster.

Mega-blaster water pistols are the most fun. A hosepipe, assuming they are not banned, just as effective but nowhere near as enjoyable.

… matey there seems to have a touch of the `bubo’s`.
Not sure if they are teeth marks or not. He’s in the bin right now.

Chill, it’s a fun thread 🙂
Chill? Yes – that’s why I posted the Jack Dee joke – it was meant to be amusing….:)

That’s both a “euw!” and an “aww” picture for me. I used to have several pet rats. They are intelligent, cunning and surprisingly friendly. Although matey there seems to have a touch of the `bubo’s`.

Superior to what? To each other? Having had both over the years and with both still in parts of the family I couldn’t chose because both are so totally different as animals. Jack Dee summed it up with his observation from each after he had completed some DIY shelving. The cat looked enigmatically on and “said” something like “what a load of rubbish – it will have fallen down by the end of the week”. The god looked lovingly at his master and said ” wonderful, marvellous, a perfect job”!!
