Catalina

Just read that the Catalina is the best Flying boat of WW2, how would one compare to a sunderland? And which ones classier!

I’m a bit puzzled with the plans of Super Catalina restoration. They seem to have aqquired the airworthy former Greenpeace cat, to use for spares to resore the wrecked ex Duxford one. Whats the point? Would it be more sense to use the ex Duxford one for spares?

When are plain sailing going to buy another?

RE: Catalina

The former Greenpeace machine wouldn’t require a vast amount of work
to return her to fairly ‘stock’ condition. She has her original fin
and engine configuration and I am sure with some further work she could be returned to wartime guise.
Regards a latter thread the North Weald example is for sale but the difference in the asking prices of it and the Greenpeace machine
was considerable .

RE: Catalina

Regarding two Cats flying on the show curcuit if Plane Sailing bought another, I don’t think there is enough interest on the show curcuit for two.
If Plane Sailing do get another, which I think is doubtful, then there will be little point trying to compete with “Killer Cat” on the curcuit, they will have to do other stuff to keep it flying.

There’s barely enough work for much rarer aircraft like ARCO’s Blenheim, and even many of the Spitfires……….if it wasn’t for them being owned by millionaires (most of them anyway) who don’t need airshow revenues so much, the vast majority of these aircraft would disappear to the US very quickly indeed.

I think the ex Green Peace Cat is going to be sold when “Killer Cat” gets up again……….but if I was them, I would sell both of their Cats, and buy one of the few which is still in stock condition with all it’s turrets intact and the original spec engines and fin etc………..this I think would be much more attractive to enthusiasts and hopefully the airshow operators.

Interestingly, the ex Green Peace Cat is to be painted up as a USN “Black Cat” for a forthcoming History Channel programme………and they haven’t even finished painting it up in RAF colours yet !
Anyone know anymore on this ?

RE: Catalina

Without meaning to nit-pick,Catalinas came in both amphibious and flying boat models. There is also the confusion caused by the Canadian name of Canso, which some think applies to the amphibious versions, when in reality the Canso name is applied to any model of Cat built in Canada.

RE: Catalina

Sadsack – On a technicality, a Catalina is an Amphibious aircraft not a flying boat.
Anyhow here is ‘Killer cat’ in happier times at the end of a late summer display.

RE: Catalina

That’s not strictly true – the Greenpeace machine was available at a price which they could not refuse. Along with the aircraft was a comprehensive spares package which can be utilized to help in the rebuild of G-BLSC as she was before she adopted the Bermudan register.
The Greenpeace machine can operate as a crew trainer and as such when the unfortunate original ‘Killer Cat’ is airworthy again they can make a decision on what way forward – speaking for myself I have never been a particular ‘fan’ of the Super Cat mods and would much rather they retain the Greenpeace machine and let ‘Killer Cat’ go home to the ‘states’.
As regards Plane Sailing I am curious as to how much interest the is in seeing more than one Catalina on the airshow circuit in the U.K.
