I got inspired by the arrival of Plane Sailing’s new Catalina and dug out this photo.
The object of the game of course is where and when π

And the winners are……………
Graeme C half a point for guessing the country and identity of the restoring group
HP57 for correctly identifying both aircraft, but Soesterberg seemed to throw some people off track
warbird full marks for identifying both aircraft, getting the location right and taking the trouble to sign up specially for this purpose!!! (correction: he was already registered, but still this seems to be his first post) π
JDK Special mention for most geographically wrong guess π
More info and photos here: Neptune Association Website, and to answer the ‘when’: January 2003. More photos of this day (including the Tracker that was also part of the lineup) on the website.
Hmm, need to find another photo now…………

Hey, I was only slightly out, like – other side of the world! π
Now where’s that ‘delete post’ button…
Guess it’s better to have a nefarious revenge though.
Cheers

RNAS Valkenburg Holland
The one without nose turret is PH-PBY being restored by the Neptune Association, the one with noseturret is 16-212 being restored for the military aviation museum at Soesterberg.

Very intriguing photo, I’d follow HP’s guess as well. The only other PBY-5A (still with a nose-turret) I can think of in Europe is the former RDanAF example (L-857) on display in Norway (BodΓΈ or Gardermoen).

I think HP’s guess is better than mine. The background looks very Soesterberg forest. Can I agree with him please Mr Archer?
By: HP57 - 31st March 2004 at 16:08
Let’s see….
Looks like Soesterberg to me.
The one without the wings is the one being restored for the MLM at Soesterberg (formerly on display at the Bosbad, Hoeven) and the other one used to be airworthy with the large orange triangles)?
Am I warm?

I’ll leave this thread alive for now, not all of us have access to the internet during working hours!
May post the answer later tonight, otherwise tomorrow morning.

It’s not Nanimo. I was there, it doesn’t look like that, nor did (or do!) the Cats look like that.
My guess is RAAF Williamstown(?) after they recieved the Cats resulting in one at the RAAF Museum, Point Cook – fuselage, but not wings.
But I’m not sure…

Looks like the UK to me…..check out the road layout in the background, it’s left hand drive! (Unless it’s Oz, of course…)
By: Graeme C - 31st March 2004 at 11:22
isnt that the catalina being restored in holland, by that neptune group?
By: paulc - 31st March 2004 at 11:11
Neither of those shown are the ones at Lee-on-Solent.
The left one has a nose turret which the Lee one’s do not.
The complete one look as if it is having blister windows installed so is not N423RS and the window layout + nose hatch is different on VP-BPS.
Could be Nanaimo ? with the ‘new’ ps machine being prepared or maybe North Weald

Australia?

That has got to be an optical illusion – two planes side by side, both with cropped wings?
