Catalinas

I read in the latest Flypast that a Catalina is being prepared at North Weald for a ferry to the US, sorry I forgot to note the serial#. She appears to be in US naval colours.
Which ‘Cat’ is this, the orange one that was there? or another?.
Also whats the latest on the UK Cat(s).
Phil.

Ta much for this – I’ve been looking for something like this for the colour scheme for my Catalina model.

Cheers

Martin Caiden

Connie is a bit eccentric, one of the last of the ‘Martin Caidin’ type aviators…

Mark,

Martin Caiden was at Oshkosh that year, and on a least one of the flights in the ‘Cat’, shooting water landings on Lake Winnebago from the RH seat.

Mark 12-

Great stuff, must’ve been VERY memorable indeed! I know Connie Edwards, spent a whole weekend with him at Breckenridge one year not too long ago (think it was ’94) when he brought the Albatross and my Photographer friend’s daughter befriended his stepson Nick, and she wound up going flying with them in the Grumman, dropping in on Hubbard reservoir near Breckenridge, and the kids got out and went swimming while Mom circled over head taking pictures! Connie is a bit eccentric, one of the last of the ‘Martin Caidin’ type aviators…but he’s still around and still a helluva nice guy…long may he fly.

Catalina

This is the RAAF Museums Catalina (A24-124) it is complete even the toilet paper in the head, but they feel that it needs to undercover until able to be displayed properly. Incredibly nice restoration.

Great photos Mark!

Some offerings from me: C-FIZO at EHEH a long time ago, this Cat is now safely in a museum here: http://www.luftfart.museum.no/Engelsk/Exhibitions/PBY-5A.htm

The second two are of the recently restored Dutch Cat, showing the scheme in which she originally flew in The Netherlands (see Stieglitz’ post above for its current colours).

A photo essay of a fun week at Oshkosh 1985

Here are an accumulated bunch of low grade (and even lower grade) photos, by photographers various, during a fun week with ‘Connie’ Edwards and his Catalina N999AR on Lake Winnebago and Lake Lawn.

To get the general picture think:- ‘U-Boat commander’s cap’, ‘Anchors Aweigh on the aircraft PA system’, ‘Cold beer’, ‘More cold beer’, ‘Hot and Cold Running girls’, ‘Trying to stand up in a small dinghy’, ‘Silly lenses’, ‘Cyclic bouncing’, ‘Martin Caiden’ but most of all think FUN. 🙂 🙂

Since the black was applied, we’ve had dewy eyed ex-RAAF Cat flyers come and say how genuine the scheme really is; “Don’t change a thing!” they say.

The gent whose wartime experience inspired the serial #’s on ‘Felix’ says that he recalls the colour as being almost faded blue, but gives that time has past and any colour scheme fades in the Northern sun from lying all day in the roads at Darwin.

Brought a tear to many eyes at Caboolture!!

G’day 😉

Speaking of black Cats, here’s the PBY-5A Super Catalina at the Tennessee Museum of Aviation, Sevierville, photographed last year.

It’ll almost be a shame when they repaint the Rasta Cat – its got quite a cult following this season!
