What causes a 504 error message? I downloaded my new ISP on Monday and since then I get a 504 message the instant I try and access some web sites. I know the sites are okay because I got someone to try them from another computer and they were fine, so mine must have a problem somewhere.

Hand – when I check the connections and stuff it says “LAN settings do not apply to dial up connections” (mine is a dial up connection), and I don’t know what the proxy thing relates to (sorry).

Thanks hand, I’ll have a look at what you suggested, but don’t be too surprised if I end up asking something else (the manuals I’ve got for XP can be so damned useless!!)

This means that your web browser has a setup issue and can’t access the web.
Go to the lan setting and check the proxy setting.
If you are not connected on an intranet , try to set nothing in the
lan setting window.
I mean no proxy server , no configuration script etc …
Am i clear enough ?

Commonly associated with FTP.
Parameters could be wrong for that site.
