Celebrity pilots….

I was just wondering how many celebs have pilots licenses.
Here are a few that I could think of:

Gary Numan
Harrison Ford
Richard Branson
John Travolta (ATPL)
Mel Gibson?? (not sure, but have a ‘hunch’)
Martin Shaw

Anyone able to add to this?

Celebrity pilot, Jimmy Buffett

Singer (Margaritaville, Cheeseburger in Paradise, etc), songwriter, author, fly fisherman and sailor…

Jimmy Buffett has more than one plane, and since the 70s had had even more… He started out on a Lake Renegade (Lady of the Waters), crashed his Grumman Goose on takeoff near Martha’s Vineyard, Boston, retired his famouls Grumman Albatross (Hemisphere Dancer) to Orlando FL Margaritaville on display, now flies a Stearman, a new corp jet and a large Cessna turboprop float plane… He flies all over the place… and writes about his adventures in his songs and books. He is a big fan of pioneer seaplane aviation ie Pan Am China Clippers… Landing his Albatross in Jamaica a number of yrs ago, he got shot up by the local authories thinking he was a drug runner… He wrote about it in his song Jamaica Mistakah…. LOL

Jimmy has numerous restaurants and cafes in the US and Caribbean. They each have huge seaplanes hanging from their ceilings… In Orlando there is about a 40ft China Clipper replica hanging…

He also has a vintage Pan American China Clipper manufacturer’s model hanging over his office desk in his Palm Beach FL office…

So, he is a busy pilot and big fan of aviation… He is not the goof off boozer and beach bum many think he is… He makes money at ever turn and supports his flying, boating and adventuring hobbies…

Cliff Robertson, who owned a Spitfire, kept it here in Windsor, Ontario, Canada for over 25 years. It was flown by my freind Jerry Billings, who has more hours in Spits than any other person in the world. Cliff, holds the Worlds Record for the longest glider distance of 240 miles. You can see him on his website flying his Spit over Montreal. Tony

Nick Mason, Pink Floyd drummer, flies helicopters and a replica Piper Cub.

I thought it was Tony Underwood who flew for Easy Jet.

Neal

Nick Mason has a Robin DR400/160 and a Super(not replica) Cub 150 based at Rendcomb. He also has a Piper L4 somewhere and a Helicopter, was a Bell 206 but i belive he has changed it now.

Yeah, Flt Lt Underwood (Rory to the rest of us!) was on Canberras on 100 Sqn just over the way from me at Wyton back in the early 90’s, and then when Wyton closed and 100 went onto Hawks, Rory went onto Hawks with them. Last I heard (mid nineties) he was going for fast jet, but as he’d already been streamed for multi on Canberras I’m not sure how accurate that is. I’d be interested to know what he’s up to now.

From what I’ve read Rory Underwood went to Canberras after not getting through the TTTE at Cottesmore. He flew Canberras and then Hawks with 100Sqn (I suppose Wyton was useful when you’re play rugger for Leicester at weekends). I believe he finished his RAF career on Dominies and with a stint as Cranwells Flight Safety Officer. He now runs a management consultancy company (or similar) with John Peters (of Gulf War “fame”) and an ex RN chap whose name escapes me…

I think it has been mentioned here before but Bruce flies for Astraeus, not Monarch as I earlier suggested. He also has a share in a Jungmann.

As for the drummer, I don’t know but he is keen on aviation.

It seems a lot of racers (F1, NASCAR, IRL, cycles, etc.) fly. They seem to like executive jets and helicopters…jets to fly to their homes in Monaco, and helicopters to take them to their seculded vacation places. I don’t know of many who bother with typical “light” planes…after spending your week driving at 200 MPH (+-), flying a Cherokee at 120 would seem boring.

Don’t forget Nikki Lauda…who liked to fly so much he started an airline.

Meh. She looked better in “Ferris”

She was only seventeen then!

I’d happily go flying with her.

Mia Sara, the girlfriend in ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ and for a while Sean Connery’s daughter in law, has a pilot’s licence.

I wonder if she wants to fly a Rearwin . . .

I’m a bit out of touch with gliding these days but I think you’ll find the world record is many times that distance and has been for ages.

more celebrety pilots

I just read a story about Clint Eastwood and Jerry Seinfeld. They reportedly flew Jim Bedes BD-10 to promote the plane when Bede started promoting it at a large airshow. After their flight demonstration, the plan was for them to meet with the public and boast of the planes performance and encourage people to buy them. I’m not sure if they were flying separate planes or not. As it turned out, they had nothing good to say about the BD-10, and recommended would be buyers to have nothing to do with them. Since then, would be purchasers overall lost interest in the BD-10, and as we all know, the BD-10, like the BD-5, is history. Tony

Don’t forget Clint Eastwood…a long time helicopter pilot. Started out in Bell 47s…now owns an AStar.

Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner got a PPL while in university….eons ago.

TV star Lorenzo Lamas is also a private pilot.

And while our UK friends may not be familiar with theses guys they deserve a mention….
The star of the old TV western “Gunsmoke”, James Arness flew a Baron.
A bunch of country music singers also flew….two being Buck Owens (a Baron), Roy Clark (a MU-2).

Away from the entertainment indusry…did you know Gen. George S. Patton had a licesnse and owned a Stinson? Eisenhower also had a PPL…and of
course President Bush 1& 2…both military trained.
Bush’s recent rivsal, John Kerry is a PPL. Sen Barry Goldwater, republican candidate in 1964 was a military pilot (and ended up a General in the USAF Reserve), as was democratic candidate in 1972, Sen. George McGovern…a B-24 pilot with the 15th AF.
