Centrifugal compressors

the centrifugal compressors were used in the early jet planes, but such design was later abandoned by the axial compressor, but is acepted that the axial sistem have lower efficiency, but that is compensated by the use of many stages of compression, i remember some proyects that use axial-centrifugal sistems (in jets and props) in one, but i dont know the progress of that investigation, there are military (or civil) engines that use centrifugal sistems in specific stages of compresions??? ,i only know about some cases on turboprops, but not in turbofans-jets
