I always refer to them as cesspits but it will not be too long before they are vintage aircraft that enthusiasts of the future will be drooling over.

The Cessna that I spent many happy hours in as a passenger in the 1970s and still my favourite Cessna (with thanks to Airshows.net)….

Lets face it, some of the key qualities that make aircraft great are longevity, number produced and adaptability, so these ubiquitous Cessnas have to be up there amongst the best.

Incidentally, the EAA AirVenture 2006 will celebrate the Cessna 172s 50th birthday, albeit a year late. http://www.airventure.org/2006/news/060214_cessna.html

Remarkably, the first production Cessna 172, N5000A c/n 28000, is alive and well at Gunter, TX.

These aircraft are frequently dismissed by those whose fail to realise that they have tought the last couple, will be introducting the next couple, of generations to flying.

In North America and Australia pleasure flying is still very much alive…and these planes are treasured possessions by those that seek their aviation “Fix” in the sky rather than just museums, books, spotters lists, and plastic kits. And as a mode of transport, they beat crowded trains and Escorts.

And don’t forget, they will be flying long after all the Lightnings, Hunters, etc are either static displays or turned into saucepans or Asian cars.

Moggy,

I did post a pic of G-ATPU in the thread Light Aircraft Pictures. Admittedly it looked very decrepit. I will see what I can do next time.

Some lovely shots of early Cessnas there.
We take them for granted and yet some are classics by age definition.

The best 150 that I ever flew was the oldest, an early ’60s example from Slepe in ’88, it just trimmed out perfectly, and even the rudder trim tab was set correctly, it flew feet off at 85kts!
