Changes Afoot At Duxford?

I hear that there might be a change in direction in the offing. Does anyone know more?

I remember my first visit to Duxford, and the WW1 display. Had a field day with a new camera. Fantastic memories!

Apparently there was an issue with visitors being unable to resist the urge to fling themselves in front of site vehicles at Duxford, which lead to their withdrawal on safety grounds.

Wasn’t exactly hard to miss though, was it. Should of stuck a ruddy big cow-catcher on the front….:D

It got me a new camera. 😀

From the Duxford web site

Free on-site mobility assistance vehicle available throughout the day for visitors who require assistance around the site. A wheelchair can be accommodated to the rear of the vehicle and folded wheelchairs can be placed at the front of the vehicle. For safety reasons this service does not run on air show days and event days.

The WW1 display and the JU-52 with the yellow cowlings are my earliest memories of Duxford. Must have been about 5 years old. Great to be reminded of those times. Thanks all 🙂

Personally I miss the Duxford tractor hauled land train more than anything. When you are my age it is a long walk back to the exit when you get down the to the bottom after working your way through the hangars. Why was it ever withdrawn?

A pragmatic approach and in part already covered by the NAHR and the Accreditation process – sadly that wasn’t a view held by a former curator of the Science Museum, with whom I crossed swords on many occasions when the very same topic was being publicly debated at meetings I attended including Ironbridge; Hendon, Duxford to name but a few!

As long as the collection stayed open – nothing, but if they closed, then they should, perhaps be absorbed into the wider national collection?

How would that be paid for?

…The wider debate should be one of ‘What should be in the National collection, and where and how should they be displayed?’

That’s an interesting thought; while I haven’t got my notes to hand, IIRC that’s where the debate started that eventually resulted in the National Aviation Heritage Register – what would be done about the National Benchmark airframes in independent collections???

There is a CASA 352 in the national collection, albeit at Cosford.

The wider debate should be one of ‘What should be in the National collection, and where and how should they be displayed?’

To my mind, the National collection includes the aircraft of the following collections:

Science Museum

RAF Museum (all sites)

Imperial War Museum (all sites)

Museum of Army Flying

Fleet Air Arm Museum

Museum of Flight at East Fortune (for now!!)

So, if I’m reading this thread correctly…

If I hear the sound of a Ju-52-3m approaching, I may hear a sudden and unexpected thump on my roof…

And secondly, Duxford is to be mounted on a large turntable so it can be rotated regularly to benefit all photographers?

Regards;
Steve

So tenders out for a Ju52 yet?
Perhaps we could get one or even a CASA one donated and then sell it off…

Used to spend a fair bit of time in Dawn Patrol……

Bloody hell! I’d forgotten all about that. It used to be one of my favourite parts of the display.

Mind you that erk never seemed to be making much progress with the job.
