Which route are you referring to, the SIN-EWR non-stop route? If so, it goes directly over the poll, according to SQ’s website. 18 hours in each direction. SIN-LAX is operated over the Pacific, not Europe.

14700 km leaves 1000 km more on the range of the aircraft, but probably because of the wind, this is the limit.

Anyway that’s NY right ? π
Yes, and probably the closest in proximity to Manhattan out of the 3 NY airports, and the busiest in terms of pax. SQ currently serves both via FRA and AMS from SIN.

I read something on the airliners.net site that SQ is gonna do the SIN-EWR route as opposed to SIN-JFK, I could be wrong…

Well, that explains them coming in @ 1445 as opposed to the scheduled 1600.

The limited seating reflects both the additional legroom required in economy for the long flights and the performance shortfall on the initial production aircraft, according to SIA officials. The carrier has not been able to install its first-class beds because of that weight penalty. The original SIA specification for the A340-500 called for 210 seats.
Shortfall in performance on the initial aircraft? That’s horrible! Sounds like the MD11 all over again. I would hope they get these ‘shortfalls’ ironed out real soon.
Interestingly enough, SQ’s 777-200ER’s have a 2 class configuration, as well. The non-ER 777’s are in a 3 class, however.

Singapore Airlines A340-500 yesterday conducted a flight from Singapore to Los Angeles, the worldβs longest nonstop flight. The 14,762-km flight was completed in 15 hr.–1 hr. less than the scheduled journey time because of favorable winds. The return trip is expected to cover the 14,700-km return journey in 18 hr. 20 min. SIA operates daily nonstop service between Singapore and Los Angeles. The A340-500 flying the route, while designed for 320 passengers, is configured for 181 seats–64 in business class and 117 in Executive Economy. The limited seating reflects both the additional legroom required in economy for the long flights and the performance shortfall on the initial production aircraft, according to SIA officials. The carrier has not been able to install its first-class beds because of that weight penalty. The original SIA specification for the A340-500 called for 210 seats. The airline will launch Singapore-New York nonstops in mid-2004.-

It is a 2 class configuration (business/executive economy). SQ’s spacebed is one of the nicer business class seats as it is fully retractable among other things, so there’s no theoretical need for a ‘first class’ cabin. Their executive economy seat, I believe, is new for this aircraft, with a longer seat pitch and wider, as they fitted the new Airbus with a 2-3-2 econo class section, as opposed to the standard 2-4-2. I’m sure this helps pax to arrive in ‘reasonable shape.’
By the way, SQ still operates their other 2 SIN-LAX flights, one via NRT and the other via TPE.

SQ20 was scheduled to depart SIN at 1600 and arrive in LAX on the same day, Feb. 3 also at 1600. I drove down there, arrived around 1545 and stayed till about 1720, but I didn’t see anything. I contacted several of the regular photographers of LAX on a.net, and one of them told me that it came in early, approximately 1445, due to ceremonies that were planned, or something. There’s no way I would have been able to get down there that early, as I get off work at 1410. I missed it π

Good for them, and nice to see that one of the nicest planes out there is in service with one of the nicest airlines out there.
