Sounds quite good, that smoking area! I’m going there on May 4th, and again coming home on May 16th. Shall be stopping there on the way to the Malaysian/Indonesian island of Borneo. Coming from Frankfurt on a Qantas 747 (can anyone tell me much about these?) and the leg between SIN and Kota Kinabalu is being operated by an Australian Airlines 767 (can anyone tell me anything about these either?!).

There’s a ‘smoking area’ where you actually exit the inside of the terminal and go to a platform that is enclosed by plexiglass. That is a great place for spotting. When I was there 2 years ago, they were expanding this area. I’m sure there is a great area outside the airport for viewing/photography, and with 5 hours, you’d have ample time to have a look. Customs and Immigration at Changi gets done very quickly, so you’d be on your way. I would email a few of the photographers on A.net that take pics at Changi regularly, and ask them about spots around the perimeter of the airport.

Forget spotting inside the terminal, as the windows are tinted. 🙁
