Charting wrecks in UK waters…

hi,
whilst googling something one of the answers was a Daily Telegraph article from Nov 2007 stating that a project co-ordinated by the English Heritage was about to begin concerning the locations of aircraft wrecks around the UK. It said requests had been made to the UK, US, and Germany for any information they might have, an estimated 11,000 RAF aircraft have been lost since 1939. The AAIB have been asked about civil aircraft.
Anyone heard about this or what’s happening with it?

regards,
jack…

hi Ross,
thank you very much, never hard anything about this project but having said that i’m not active in this subject… but it seems by reading it a very comprehensive and thorough report covering just about any eventuality. Interesting to read paragraph 5.2.18 about the RAF Museums thoughts on recovering aircraft from the sea, so within 5yrs(6/13) their policy had changed, or with the Do.17 being rare and its condition reasonable, it got the nod… After reading of the “new” museum changes, I don’t think it would happen in 2018.

thanks again for your reply, regards,
jack…

Hi Ross

Thanks for the link to the report. I may be able to find out more about my Uncle, never came back from his first sortie, the only missing aircraft in his flight. I believe that he came down somewhere north of the Netherlands. It’s a shame that my granny isn’t alive as she always mourned the fact that she never knew where he was, just missing.

Also it contains a good deal of general information about RAF records and resources useful for any research I think and a good kick-start for beginners.

Cheers
James
