OK you laughter-silvered wing dancers, how many of you know what frequency you can chat air-to-air on?
How well do you think pilots have been informed about it?
And are you absolutely certain when you can and cannot use it?
Y11F: I know you know the answer, so please give the others a chance.

How do you suggest that I find out what information I have missed?
Don’t worry. We’ll look after you.
Now, have you got your nice shiny Mode S transponder ready to be fitted yet?

Janie, you do know about the changes in the low-flying regs…
I saw some low-flying regs. I had to duck to avoid them.
I’m afraid I missed that. I’ve been too busy to read mags, internet or even fly. How do you suggest that I find out what information I have missed? I do have my own plan (just so you know), but I wonder how other people catch up on missed info.
I just passed both FAA & JAA medicals this week, so I’m delirious with joy that the psychosis wasn’t spotted.

You make it sounds like a famous scene from the BoB.
“Stop that chit-chat!”
“Repeat please…”

Talking about air-to-air frequences, you brits are at least more cultivated than your neighbors across the channel. They don’t seem to have any problem using 121.5 as some kind of chat frequency 🙁 It can, at times be very frustrating trying to maintain a listening watch on 121.5 when the frequency is alive with french chit-chat

Erm…
Can I just point out that there has, so far, been only one person on the thread who hasn’t been aware of SafetyCom since its inception, and hasn’t had a clear idea about its purpose and limitations? 😉 😉 :diablo:
Maybe we are really going to have to make a point of PM’ing Janie every time there’s a change in the regs.

… don’t you

How about instructors pointing it out during the two yearly flight for revalidation.
Thought the CAA were very clear on it not being used for air to air chat.
By: Chipmunk Carol - 16th November 2005 at 12:09
You could pin up notices around airfields for one.
You may fly out of a private strip and only land at private strips.
Or mail everyone on the CAA register.
Expensive.
Or use the power of the GA press?
Good idea, but that would make them responsible for official distribution.
Any qualified instructors out there with good ideas?

A bit like NOTAMs innit. How do you get poeple to read them?

The answers:
Q: How many of you know what frequency you can chat air-to-air on?
A: None. Nobody knows. I guess there isn’t one then.
Q: How well do you think pilots have been informed about it?
A: Judging by the response here, I think that the information is getting through to some and not others.
Q: And are you absolutely certain when you can and cannot use it?
A: Many are not.
Ok, so I was thinking about SafetyComm 135.475. I just thought that it had not been advertised very well. But then, what is the best way to inform pilots? I have just picked on SafetyComm to make a point.
What I am thinking is that, if you are a pilot who does not socialise, read aviation magazines or have an internet-linked computer, how are you supposed to find out information like this? I didn’t do a UK PPL. What do they tell you to do in the U.K. to keep up to date?

Calling Janie on 135.475, what’s new?
Oi, that’s not an intention.
Calling all Janie Traffic, Moggy intends listening to your gen as and when you see fit to stop teasing us, Janie Traffic
Moggy
That’s how you do it. 😉

Wasn’t there some rumour a while ago that the CAA were going to have proper unicom? I wonder if Janie’s gen is connected?
By: macky42 - 12th November 2005 at 17:23
I’m intrigued.
Safety com, launched in the Spring of this year on 135.475 is definitely not for air to air use. I am unaware of any other frequency innovations since then.
I await Janie’s bean-spilling with ill-concealed anticipation 🙂

Me too, AIUI Safetycom is only for transmitting intentions, with no responses expected, not even a/g. Janie obviously has the inside track here… 😀

Thanks guys. I’m going to pause a little longer to see if we get any further responses. My gut feeling (but I have no proof) is that not enough people know the facts. This is a good place to spread the word, so long as we have the facts straight.

Er, is there one in the UK? SafetyCOM isn’t air-air. Gilder pilots seem to get two frequencies to gabble on, 129.975 and 130.1.
123.45 officially frowned upon though you could cheat and use 118.0!
Nope, apparently being monitored now. . . .
