A Man has been banned from flying for five years after allegedly threatening to kill all passengers onboard a flight bound for Spain.
Robert Russell become intoxicated while waiting for a flight to Malaga, Spain at Gatwick Airport, UK, on October 15 last year, the UK’s Telegraph reported.
About 15 minutes into the flight Mr Russell was ordered to stay in his seat after abusing an air stewardess and trying to fondle her arm, Brighton Crown Court was told.
“Oi blondie. Come and sit here so I can stroke you,” he allegedly yelled to the stewardess.
When a passenger intervened Mr Russell allegedly threatened to kill “all the passengers onboard” before pulling at the emergency exit door and being restrained by crew and two passengers.
The court heard how the pilot then decided to turn the plane back to Gatwick Airport, ordering terrified passengers to put their seatbelts back on.
Defence lawyer Christopher Rodwell said his client was “genuinely remorseful” for what he had done.
Mr Russell was banned from every airport in the UK for five years, jailed for one year, ordered to do 200 hours of community service and fined £4,643 ($9482).

Flying Stateside or to Asia would be very dull without my usual whiskey and coke!
Indeed. I drank a really rather large qualtity of red wine flying back from Tokyo a few weeks ago and guess what… It didn’t make me want to try open the emergency exits, or threaten to kill anyone, or do anything else even vaguely like that, just the same as it doesn’t make the vast majority of people who fly want to do such things. To say let’s ban alcohol completely demonstrates a spectacular ignorance of what the problem actually is, and that problem amounts to the fact that a minority of people in this world will do stupid things regardless of what you do. Banning alcohol from airports and aircraft will do nothing whatsoever to change that. Weed out these low life scum, keep them away from airports and aircraft and you start to solve the problem. Ban something that people wrongfully perceive to be the cause and you’ll fail spectacularly to do anything except make the vast and entirely innocent majority suffer.

This I completely 100% disagree with. Why the hell should those of us who drink responsibly when flying and enjoy doing so have to suffer as a result of the odd idiot?
Paul
Exactly. I enjoy a drink when flying, and I enjoy a few when going on holiday or long haul. Why should I have this taken away becuase of such a minority??

They (the authorities) need to come down hard on cretins like this.
A few years back I had to endure a similar situation (unreported) on a flight to Mallorca.
I had my two small children with me and it was pretty unpleasant.
Two blokes did get a few good punches in on the culprit which was summary justice!
Thank God for the modern auto pilot…so the pilot and co-pilot could sort it out !!

Why not go a step further and stop selling alcohol altogether as it causes death due to car accidents, injury due to violence and general thuggery. No. People should be allowed to enjoy a drink while flying. Though if possible, people consuming/having consumed too much should be more closely monitored.

also Airports/Airlines should not be allowed to sell alcohol to passengers. They dont mind selling it at twice the high street price but are the 1st to complain when a drunken passenger misbehaves.Remove the oppertunity, remove the problem.
Typical small minded gutless management attitude, this is even evident in 10 Downing Street.
Blanket policy the majority to manage the minority.
This is the epitamy of what’s wrong with this country as a whole.

You will find that his details will be flagged up on airline systems when they enter his name or when his passport is put on the system. I am sure he will have no chance of flying for 5 years. They should do more of this and it should be an automatic ban which airlines can enforce, idiots like this should not be allowed to fly at all. You could say that it is like having a drunk behind the wheel of a car as he is endangering others.

The article states that this passenger became intoxicated at the airport whilst waiting for his flight. Since he kicked off just 15 minutes into the flight, he must have been in a pretty bad way upon boarding the aircraft, which makes me wonder how he wasn’t noticed by ground staff during boarding? Fair enough, he might not have looked drunk, but I would have expected somebody to notice the smell and to stop him from boarding.
The punishment is a good one though. A travel ban, prison and a fine. Hopefully, other would-be idiots will learn from this guy’s mistake!

Chav or not.He should have his passport removed and not given back.
As the things stand, he is forbidden to fly from UK airports for 5 years. Which means that he still is allowed to travel abroad by ship or tunnel, and embark on planes while abroad. He is also forbidden to fly domestically.
But he certainly is not free to travel for his one year prison term!
