Looks like Hugo Chavez has decided to become an antagonist in yet another war of words…but this time, his target is England. Chavez seems to be of the opinion that the Falklands belong to Argentina:

Anyone want to take bets on which opponent of a US ally he decides to throw his hat into the ring with next? My money is that he sides with Russia in the dispute with Japan over the Kuril Islands 😀

Apaprently they don’t want it to be disputed for much longer.
That’s kinda what I was thinking. The general concensus seems to be “whatever they built it for there are easier ways of doing it” but I think in the end you don’t spend that kind of effort on a whim. If I were India that would definitely be a concern in my book. One gets the impression that China is determined to get it’s hand on every scrap of land it can no matter how spurious the claim.

Hey, SOC take it easy man. It’s just a phrase without anything to back this statement.
Hence why I called it a war of words…
Besides, the economist is a paper to support certain ideas not to inform you about real facts.
There are a number of places that reported on this. I just posted the link to the Economist article because I thought it hilarious that they actually pointed out that the first person to set foot on the Falklands was British :diablo:

More like the Axis of Irrelevance.
BTW, being the resident Google Earth expert you are what is your take on that giant land model the Chinese have built of a Chinese/Indian disputed piece of turf?

It’s clear he wants to be the unofficial spokesman for the “have nots” against those who he feels are the “haves.” It always plays well in the third world.
Today CNN had a picture of him hugging the Iranian leader (whatever the hell his name is) on their front page.

I think Chavez is starting to lose the plot a bit. Of course it’s useful to pander to some stupid poor locals who think in terms of “four legs good, two legs bad”, but that was a highly pointless exercise.

ONCE again the Falkland Islands, in the South Atlantic, are under assault. In London preparations are already under way to celebrate the 25th anniversary next year of Britain’s victory over Argentina in the Falklands war. But if Argentina’s president, Néstor Kirchner, gets his way, Britain will not be celebrating for long. Backed by his Venezuelan counterpart, Hugo Chávez, Mr Kirchner has launched a new verbal offensive over the islands’ sovereignty, claimed by both Argentina and Britain.
