It’s hat in hand time…my fiance is taking a trip to see me again in April. Being a teacher, she has to coincide her journey with school holidays, which of course means silly money.
BA and Qantas are between £1,100 and £1,300 for “cheapest” economy tix. Way too much – and that was only MEL-LHR. Cathay Pacific are a marginal amount cheaper via HKG, Emirates ditto and Signapore Air are over twice as much! Air NZ were 30% more than Emirates. I also tried Malaysian, but their online reservation system is “temporarily” down. With the eedjits from Thai, you have to sign up before they will allow you to book a flight.
So…is it actually possible to fly MEL-LON in April without paying through the nose? In June 2002 I flew LHR-MEL myself, with BA, for a shade under £700.

RE: Cheapest way from Melbourne to Isle of Man??
No, it was a fair point – whatever I do, the fare is over £1000 in economy class!

Try expedia.com (believe expedia.co.uk in the uk), or travelocity.com. Usually very good deals.

I dunno, tbh, but it’s alright (I think) if you do it over the phone, rather than online.

RE: Cheapest way from Melbourne to Isle of Man??
I do not understand the “security” notion, which says only the person travelling is alowed to pay for the ticket.
1. What about minors – are parents banned from paying now? Does that mean your 16 or 17 year old sprog gets a free flight (as airlines will not accept payment)?
2. Loads of my colleagues have taken business trips in the last month or so. They have flown with BA, SAA, DL and AC. On all occasions, our dept. secretary booked the flights using a corporate credit card in HER name. How come this was allowed?
3. Exactly how, does this enhance security?

Tried it on a.net’s new flight thingy and got a cheapest of £1,400 I think you’ll struggle to get below £1,000!

Malaysian have some good offers at the moment for Man or LHR to various Oz destinations for £499 incl taxes return. For a fraction more they will take you to New Zealand.
I believe this is for travel up to June.
Not sure if that deal would apply for journeys starting in Oz to Uk return.
Usual UK agencies are offering this including travelbag.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-01-03 AT 01:03 AM (GMT)]MEL-HNL-YYZ-LHR/MAN-IOM. Air Canada from Melbourne to London or Manchester then British Midland to Ronaldsway. For the return you wouldn’t need to be in Manchester until 10:00 hours and London no earlier than 11:00 hours for the AC857 departure for YYZ. The return would probaly take you via Vancouver and Honolulu.

RE: Cheapest way from Melbourne to Isle of Man??
you might find most places doing that… wanting the card holder to be among the travelling party… it’s the new security measures, not much you can do to get around it, unfortunately.
I’ve had a bit more of a look around Opodo… Austrian Airlines (Lauda Air) will fly you from Melbourne to CDG via Vienna on your dates for 803 pounds + 73 tax… dunno how much it’d cost from CDG to IOM, though… (easyjet to LPL, maybe?)
only thing is, to meet the return flight you’d need to be at CDG for 6:45am…

RE: Cheapest way from Melbourne to Isle of Man??
Hopefully departing MEL on 12 April (Sat) returning 23 April (Weds).
I tried messing around with the departure date, but to no avail. It seems the airlines are all in a conspiracy (apart from Air NZ which charges a totally wierd price!)
Also, this is my treat. Some of the airlines seem to say, very forcefully, that I am not allowed to pay because it is not I who is travelling. I’m beginnig to think, sod the internet, ask a travel agent 😮

RE: Cheapest way from Melbourne to Isle of Man??
When in April? tried to price it with Opodo (flying MEL-IOM on Thursday the 3rd, returning on Sunday the 20th).
Total fare came up as 1251 pounds. (1185 fare + 66 tax)
(MH MEL-KUL, VS KUL-LHR, BA LGW-IOM, same route/carriers on the way back).
Possibly cheaper if you go midweek, though…
