no, just what’s going to the Hold. it then goes down the conveyor belt as if you’d checked in at the desk, without keeping everyone behind you waiting as you show your passport, they go through the computer to find your reservation, ask the security questions, print the boarding pass and luggage tags. it’s really just a case of dropping the bag off, leaving you free to clear through security faster (although depending how many self service kiosks there are, you may have to queue to access them, though).
Having said that, not all self service machines provide luggage tags, some airlines you still need to get them printed out at the bagage drop, although you just have to show your Boarding pass rather than go through the whole rummage-in-your-bag-for-your-ticket charade.
With BA, for example, I haven’t even had to swipe my credit card through, just putting my Exec Club card through the reader has brought up my booking details (provided, obviously, you gave them your Exec Club number when you made the booking, or subsequently added it online)

Hmmm, do I drop the hand baggage off there as well? And where/when do I get it back?
You just drop your hold luggage there. You keep your hand luggage with you as normal. Yo receive your bags at the baggage reclaim in your arrival airport as normal.

The Bag Drop is effectively a check-in desk, but it’s just the conveyor Belt, with a Staff member present to check everything is correctly labelled when dropped off.

Ooh, thanks Bhoy. Been looking for that! Quick question though, what is the bag drop thing about?

self check-in? it’s a touchscreen that asks you questions like where would you like to sit, and you touch the seat you want on the screen.
easyJet have a wee demo on their site if you want to look…

(obviously, the demo being easyJet, it dosen’t ask about what seat you want ;))

How do you even work a self check in machine ?
By: Sunjet757 - 5th July 2006 at 01:26
I would get there 3 hours before if it MAN. Last summer we arrived 2 hours before for an XLA flight and it was absolute chaos. It took nearly an hour and a half to get checked in and then half an hour to get through the security checks. By the time we got airside they were already calling our names to go to the gate immediately!

Only Monarch Schedualed Passengers can use it not Charter.
Jon
I’ve seen it available for charter flights to Rhodes and Kos when I’ve been messing around with it on days out in MAN but it seems to be hit and miss what flights (if any) it’s available for!

For charter flights from MAN, check in opens 3 hours before departure. You may be able to use one of MAN’s new self service check in machines although they only seem to work when they want to!
It does? OK… For all the 88 scheduled short haul flights I’ve done… 🙂

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but as markkipling has demonstrated, you can find the answers to your questions by doing a very simple internet search. The net is a wonderful and informative resource. Just think… If you made use of that vast amount of info that’s accessible instantly right under your fingers, the rest of this forum wouldn’t need to sift through 746 individual threads referring to your holiday!
Check in for every one of the 88 short haul flights I’ve done, self check in aside, has opened roughly two hours before departure. As T5 says, arrive two hours before and you’ll be OK!

Surely you have flown before, haven’t you?
Just get there 2 hours before. That would be fine.
