Easyjet opened a new route without getting permission, so the first flight was given free. Then the cheeky Greek owner, a multi-millionaire, went around the aircraft begging for donations!
The passengers gave willingly. No way, I would do that…
Any comments?

A slight distortion of the facts here.
Back in July 1999, easyJet started a route from Geneva to Barcelona that was sold “subject to Government Approval” (very common amongst non-EU flights). They fully expected this to be granted by the time of the first flight, however, Swissair launched an objection, which meant that easyJet could not sell seats on a scheduled basis. They offered customers a full refund at the gate, so the flight was not “sold” – and asked for donations, which apparently netted a fair percentage of the original revenue back.
To get around this, they started to sell the air ticket with the right to use an easyjet tent, around 60 miles from the airport. Needless to say, VERY few people use the tent, but the fact that this was included meant that this is a package, and Swissair had to lump it.
The option was a straight cancellation, with much more inconvenience to the passengers. Me, I would have given them 100% of it back, but then I am honest, and I pay for what I use, rather than “scam” and “knock off”….

Who can rememeber VJ(?) the very camp cabin crew memeber working for Brittania Airways in the very early Airlines programs?
As for Stelios he did the same trick when he set up a Cinema, went round with buckets. What ever happend to them?

Stelios hasn’t owned the airline for years! He does however have about a 20% stake. But the video is probably very out of date.
Yes indeed very out date times have moved on!
I remeber watching the very old airline where it starred Brittania Airways on Sky Travel, I think they only took it off tv about 2 years ago

If their poor planning meant they had to give the flights away, no I would not pay into a begging bowl. And, yes, I would accept the flight!
Can’t say any fairer than that! 😀

But what did he get out of it, publicity!
Look at RYR with all these cheap flights, 1p is almost giving seats away, if they asked me to make a donation after paying such a small fee for the flight, I would – even if it was just a few quid.

But you’d more than happily take the free flight? 😉
