Passenger hurt in plane crash

The cherokee crashed as it came in to land
A woman passenger was airlifted to hospital after a light aircraft crashed while landing at a Norfolk airfield.
The four-seater Cherokee-D plane from Surrey crashed at Northrepps International Airport, near Cromer.

Three women and a male pilot were on board the plane.

Police were called to the incident at 1140 BST.

A spokeswoman for Norfolk Fire Service said three passengers were already free from the aircraft when fire crews arrived.

The woman, who had to be freed from the plane, was taken to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital by air ambulance suffering back injuries, said a spokeswoman for East Anglian Ambulance Service.

The three other people on board were treated at the scene for minor injuries, she said.

Airfield operator Chris Gurney, who witnessed the crash, stressed the incident was not serious.

“They got the landing a bit wrong and caught a downdraft just at the wrong moment and hit the ground a bit harder than they had hoped,” he said

He said the plane was about 10ft from the ground when it crashed.

Police said the plane, which is based at Redhill, Surrey, had later been handed back to the pilot.

The Civil Aviation Authority and Air Accidents Investigation Branch have been informed.
