Chester Airport Mystery Aircraft- MIG?

Apologies to everyone if this topic has already been covered but I have done searches in all forums with various keywords and got no results. Anyway, on a recent visit to the Newark Air Museum I got into a chat with the curator Mike Smith about the two Migs that they have on display. I already knew from the Guide Book that they were on loan from a company in Wales. Mike mentioned that the chap who had brought them in from the former USSR had apparently got some more ‘rusting outside his offices that his missus was nagging him to get rid of’ or words to that effect. So after Googling the company name and putting the postcode into Google Earth (they are actually at Chester Airport, not North Wales as the guide book claimed) it closed in on a swept wing object at 53-11-11.88N 2-58-35.55W. Definition is pretty bad so I can’t see any more details. Does anyone have any photos of this aircraft from the ground? Is it another Mig 23/27? And while we are on the subject what do our collective brains know about the two exhibits at Newark?

Fishbed792, if you would like some cockpit photographs of these two airframes that are still displayed at Newark Air Museum, send me an email address via the PM system and I will email some over to you.

Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23M “Flogger” – 024003607 “07”

Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-27K “Flogger” – 61912507006 “71”

Happy New Year! 🙂

Nice and not so common cockpit project you have there! Would be nice if you could give updates on the restoration here 🙂

It is an interesting cockpit, but also a lot of work. The canoppy and the radome is still available.
One problem is the many small holes in the air inlet. In the cockpit area only a few holes. Difficult are also the lateral front glasses. In these glasses is the anti-radar – coating oxidized, thus blind.
I think some time will pass until the start of the restoration.
Some other cockpits are there first turn.

I presume that’s the example shown below that appeared on eBay several times, but the seller valued it higher than any purchaser did. Shame, it was quite complete inside….

Yes, this is the Mig – 23 from the eBay listing.
I only know the price inclusive transport to Germany, ca. 4000, – Eur
The cockpit is in good condition , some things are missing, the stick, the HUD, and a panel with 3 Instruments and small parts .
Currently, only missing the panel, it is a problem to find this.

In 2010 or 2011 the instrument panels on ebay were offered.
However, a German man bought then the entire cockpit section.
Last year I purchased the partially dismantled cockpit section.
In the coming years, the cockpit is to be restored.

My question is, who can help me with information about the Mig 23 M 50 (blue) before 1993?

I can confirm that Red 50 is still at Foulness, standing on its undercarriage, minus wings but otherwise pretty intact. It looked in pretty poor condition when I saw it yesterday, and appeared to have been subject to some small arms fire trials on the fuselage. Its located on the far side of the island in a compound near the sea wall , north of the old Pegasus engine development stand area. No pics I’m afraid!

I have spoken to representative of Hawarden Air Services, she was kind of reluctant to talk about the aircraft saying that they do not want to draw attention to them as she did not want ‘loads of aircraft spotters’ turning up disrupting their business. She did say that they had no plans to restore them but also no plans to scrap them either and they are not for sale. I guess they will just sit there until they fall apart- not long to wait for that if Scouse’s photo is anything to go by.

By the way, on the subject of old Russian aircraft, I have posted some pics of a recent flight on an AN12 here-

Another one that Hanningfield handled that probably ended up at Foulness. I think this was the one I saw at Boscombe Down back in August 1994 being towed from from one side of the field to the other.

Please tell me that the one at Foulness is not being used for gunnery practice…

It was used for target work and scrapped. Remains went to Hanningfield Metals with the cockpit possibly saved??

Two Sukhois and a MiG from the railway bridge at the north side of the airfield, exactly as Thunderbird 167 says.
The aircraft are tucked away behind a gatehouse, so I reckon if you asked the man on the gate very nicely you might well get closer. I didn’t have the time today, unfortunately.
Just as I left, a chap in a blue MPV almost the same as mine pulled up armed with binos and cameras. Didn’t have time to stop – a fellow forumite?

Just a note on the aircraft mentioned, I was the person who arranged for them to be displayed at the BAe Chester airshows in 1996, 1998 and 2000. We towed them across the airfield with a fire service landrover and a home-made tow bar, I recall the towbar breaking with one of the Hinds, both me and the Hind went onto the grass. Also, we actually had an Antonov AN-2 very, very slightly airborne on one occasion, and at least one of the Sus’ engines was run up by an un-named corporate jet pilot…..Ah!!! happy days.

The Mig 23MF Red 50 is apparently the one at Foulness and had moved there by November 2003

According to the latest Newark Air Museum Guide Book the MiGs they have on loan from Hawarden Air Services are as follows:

Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23ML “Flogger” – 024003607 “07”

Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-27K “Flogger” – 61912507006 “71”

But it may be that the MiG-23, ’07’ is an early M type not an ML; also the MiG-27, ’71’ might not be a K variant as this had a different and more sophisticated Laser Rangefinder in the nose.

Both are listed as having been delivered from Hawarden, Clwyd on May 22nd 2002.

Both aircraft are in the aircraft list on the museum website www.newarkairmuseum.co.uk

So if the other two are at Newark, I wonder what happened to Mig 23 red 50 then. Scouse did you get a peek over the fence?

Also was anyone here at Broughton or Woodford when they were displayed? Also was there anything in the aviation press when these aircraft were first brought into the country?

There is a Mig 23 at Foulness but i can’t remember where that one came from.

Tache3
I was at Broughton and Woodford when the aircraft were displayed. I’ve got photos but they are slides, other wise i’d put them up. I’ll have a dig through my files to check just in case there is something I can post.
Had a tour round the hanger just after the full list above had arrived and there were blokes working on them, was strange to walk into there and see 3 Hinds in a row, sight sort of stays with you.

What used to be here included the following:

10 x An-2
2 x Mi-2
3 x Mi-24 (one of which went to BAeS)
35 r Su-17
04 r MiG-23ML
23 r MiG-27
50 r MiG-23MF
54 r Su-17
71 r MiG-27K

Plus a couple of L-29s (which were joined by some of the 6 from Cumbernauld) as well a gaggle of Yak-50/52.

They arrived at Seaforth Docks on October 27 1993.
