Chicago O' Hare Airport

I am just finalising my holiday and I will have to transfer at Chicago. I was wondering if anyone has been there and what it is like to transfer between the International Terminal and the rest of the terminals which seem to be apart. On the return flight I have only got one hour between connections which is pretty tight.
Also why is there a Terminal 1,2,3and 5 but no terminal 4 on their website?

Yes it is. Transit way from T1 to the right of the airside / landside exit in concourse A (?).

Lovely frozen yoghurt (nice and healthy) with a hot fudge sauce (hmmm).

Greekdude

I am only in New Orleans for 5 days and I was thinking of trying to squeeze a trip up to Memphis (to see Gracelands:D ). A car is just too long but I was surprised at the cost of flights. NorthWest and Continental were around $800 (same day) and even Air Tran via IAD was $507 with a return the next day. Its only the distance between London & Edinburgh and I thought flights in the USA were supposed to be cheaper than Europe!?

ORD is nice, until your plane pushes back on time but sits on the tarmac for 40 minutes to get in line for takeoff and you miss your connecting flight because of it. 😡 Everything else about it is great, though.

Many thanks for that detailed Info Greek Dude, its certainly put my mind at rest.
I am looking forward to the trip as I have only spent 4 days in the U.S.A. before (NY) and O’ Hare is an airport I have always wanted to visit.

Ok, since you’re flying UA, it’s going to be too easy. As I mentioned, upon you’re arrival into T5, you’re going to claim your luggage, go through customs and immigration, and upon exiting all that, there will be an interline baggage belt. You just put your baggage onto that on your own (or some handlers will be there to assist you) and go to the monorail to T1. I’m assuming UA will have given you your boarding pass for your New Orleans flight already, so you’ll just have to pass through security again at T1.

Spot on – it’s a nice easy process.

As far as your return goes, to my knowledge, all UA flights depart T1 Intl or domestic. The Intl terminal(T5) is only used for arrivals. That is probably done because it makes it that much easier to connect, and you won’t have to go through security when connecting from domestic to Intl.

Isn’t the main reason for all international arrivals coming into ORD T5 that it is the only terminal with immigration and customs facilities? The only time I ever flew internationally into any other terminal was into T1,from Toronto, and the US immigration was all taken care of at Pearson before boarding. Like you point out, United send all international departures from T1 because it makes transfers a lot easier, but also because there is no need for any immigration / customs procedure

There are no problems with people having to come through security when changing from international to domestic connections – the security check is just a by-product of T5 being relatively distant from the rest.

O’Hare is much like LAX in that you don’t need to go through security to transfer between domestic terminals – I always walk round to T2 if I have a wait simply because there’s an excellent frozen yoghurt stand there.

Just my 2p

I’m assuming UA will have given you your boarding pass for your New Orleans flight already, so you’ll just have to pass through security again at T1. When I had to connect at ORD on UA from LHR, it didn’t take me that long to connect to my flight to SFO, so you should ok with your allotted time. As far as your return goes, to my knowledge, all UA flights depart T1 Intl or domestic. The Intl terminal(T5) is only used for arrivals. That is probably done because it makes it that much easier to connect, and you won’t have to go through security when connecting from domestic to Intl. It’s not like that at all airports. UA at LAX operates all flights out of 3 terminals that are all connected, meaning you don’t have to go through security to go from one to the other (it wasn’t like that about 10 years ago), unlike you’re arriving from international connecting to domestic. UA at SFO operates all domestic flights out of Terminals 6 and 7, which are connected, and operate all International arrivals and departures(unlike ORD) out of the Intl terminal. They are adjacent to one another so it’s only a short walk. UA at IAD is similar to LAX. I’ve never arrived UA internationally at DEN or JFK, just departed at JFK, so I’m not sure how they work there, but I’m sure they are similar to the LAX situation since they operate all flights out of the same terminals at both those airports. Hope this has all been of some help.

Thanks to yourself and GZYL for the info.
All the flights are United. I am arriving on United into Terminal 5 then leaving from Terminal 1 to New Orleans. The return is not so bad as I arrive into Terminal 1 and also depart from Terminal 1. But if all international flights are terminal 5 I wonder why it is terminal 1 departure to LHR. I have bought these tickets cheap over the internet from a place in Edgware Road in London. I unfortunately have an old fogies suspicion of paying money to people you are not sure of. If I was in UK I could check easy enough but trying to do everything from here over the phone/internet is a pain as well as expensive on the phone.
