Chinese Air Power Thread 17

Reportedly the first serial Hongdu JL-10 – formerly L-15 – for the PLAAF performed its maiden flight at Nanchang today. Quite interesting it followed closely the first flight of the first aircraft for an export customer – said to be Zambia – on 29. June.

Must be the case. Very least, wouldn’t a WS-15 class engine require inlet design changes?

Possibly! Depends if the fighter was designed around WS15 or not, differences between the dimensions of two engines etc. But I was referring to the rest of the airframe.

So with more powerful engine, would it need a major redesign?

Its a design philosophy. They have to compensate for having weaker engines compared to the rivals/competitors. Result is longer, narrower fighters. J-10 and J-20 follows this pattern. J-20 itself won’t reach its true potential until the WS-15 with 3D TVC is available.

Chinese aircraft in general just look very long. the J-20 compared to pak-fa or f-22, the j-10 compared to f-16 or gripen, or the j-8 compared to the f-4.
the only normal looking one is the jf-17.

China is at basic level. Chinese does not even realize they put the big factories at wrong places. large scale aviation factories need there own factory towns and not in coastal regions. it still very manual job and large scale turnover of labor can either destroy the whole projects or import depended.

your mig 1.44 clone is being produced faster than the other stealth jets bar f-35

Beautiful isn’t the word I was thinking. Brutish more like. Not in a bad way.

With the big body and the canards, it looks mean.

I think head on is one of the best angles of the plane tbh; I think the forward 20-45 degree angle is the more unflattering angle for it.

I think the bad angles for J-20 are those that emphasise the sheer length of the plane without simultaneously showing the breadth of the wings and canards for balance. And also angles that make the plane look heavy and brutish, lacking in elegance or any sense of motion — this is the category that the head-on angle falls into IMO.

Fantastic images, thanks for posting. J-20 has a lot of good angles, albeit some ugly ones as well, e.g. head-on.

Beautiful aircraft. We can, now, count double digits, right? It passed 10 copies?..

Canopy doesn’t seem to be tinted.

Hard to say; some photos of earlier J-20s had obvious tint, which then disappeared for other photos of the same aircraft…

I imagine the presence may depend on lighting conditions.

the area rules looks fine to me. The waisted section lines perfectly with the maximum wingspan.
