Flew on China Southern, China Eastern & Air China on internal flights earlier in the year and had some of the best food on a flight for some time on all three.
Service was excellent with 2nd meal provided (yes it was that nice) without any trouble – something you never get on Western airlines.

…as well as many different airlines which are really the same airline! It personally makes me very cynical and distrusting of Chinese aviation in general (Cathay excepted).

The were the worst in the world some years ago, but situation have improved quite a lot. The reason was lack of maintenace, all planes, air travelling boom which made safety procedures more relaxed. But for some years now, no more crashes than expected, modern fleet and western standars (in service and management).
