How does the Chinese Navy’s Type 052C compare to South Korea’s and Japan’s Aegis Destroyers??? Are more flash than capability???

Hasn’t TY-90 got a much smaller engagement envelope than SA-19? TY-90 as an AAM from helicopters has what 7km or there abouts so as a SAM without additional booster, what 5km????
They have several choices, QW-3, QW-4 are among them. And there is the other question of whether it’s better to do that or to put Type 730 and some future VLS version of HH-7 on the same ship. You are going to get much better performance that way.

Could it be Type-730 guns and QW-3/4??

Not exactly true…
Photos have surfaced recently of a gun/missile CIWS that looks suspiciously like the Palma 😀
It’s still in concept stage and also seems to be more of an export product. What seems to be natural is for them to add TY-90s to Type 730 like what happened with LD-2000.

It’s kind of interesting that they seemed to have copied everything that they liked from the Russians. The only concept they haven’t copied is kashtan, but PLAN was said to not be too impressed by it.

Sometimes it seems like appearances mean almost as much as capabilities! (i.e. PLAN)

I of course was not talking about the structure of the ships itself. But, the Weapons Systems, Radars, etc.

Actually, with the strength of the Chinese shipbuilding industry which is league and bounds ahead of the Aerospace industry, navy needs even less help. I certainly would not want to see more of the 70s style destroyers getting imported or the 70s style air defense units imported.

Well, at least they look the part……….Also, while the PLAAF is growing by leaps. Looks like the Navy could use some help. Surely Russia would be happy. Especially, with less and less from needed from the Chinese Aerospace Industry…………..:o

if we compare 052C to Atago and KDX-3, then it should probably be KDX-3 > Atago > 052C. But I think in many ways, 052C is an experiment platform. It added many features and concept not in PLAN before. Whereas KDX-3 and Atago had the luxury of using the much more mature Aegis system.
If we look at 052C’s role in PLAN, it’s role is to provide early detection/tracking of aerial targets including stealthy ones (Which explains what that old Yagi antenna is for). If my interpretation of the capability of 052C is correct, then it’s job is to receive data and pass targetting data to other ships of the fleet. And then engage the long distance ones. Basically, it’s job is more command+control+providing early warning than air defense. It relies on Type 730 and EW suite as defense against anti-ship missile. Not exactly comforting against concentrated attack. That’s what it really lacks compared to KDX-3/Atago.
Things I think they can improve on in follow up class:
1. 48 HH-9 is probably enough, but need space for HH-16/HH-7. Preferably a common VLS like MK-41
2. replace that Yagi antenna with something like S1850M that is more stealthy.
3. make the hull more stealthy in general.
4. Improve the low altitude tracking radar and the MFRs

Scooter, here is the latest PLAN thread.

Is the 052C more flash than capability? Simply put, “We Don’t Know“! There is little or no official info. Few tit-bits here and there. I don’t think they will release those any time soon either. I mean, we are still not clear about what type of RADAR it is! Though one thing; from the external appearance, it is a quantum leap for the PLAN. But, if you are going to compare with vessels of other navies? Well forget about it. It won’t get you anywhere.

probably kdx I, II > 052C > Kongo.
good detail on these ships is hard to come buy so its just guestimates.
the 052C is aimed towards air defense and it has better equipment for it than the KDX I, II. When comparing ship industries, China has a longer history of building warships than S.Korea, but S.Korea has experience in building commercial ships which is different.
the 052C incorporates more radar reducing features than the KDX I,II and both are more designed for a variety of roles than being more dedicated than the 052C.
The Kongo is very good but its really nothing more than a super version of the American Aleigh Burke. When the S.Koreans release the KDX III, I think it will be able to match the 052C. It is the heaviest of their three projects and will be called emperor shizong.
