“Chipmunks Around The World” – Squadron Leader Bill Purchase

A Best Chipmunk Cup will be awarded in the afternoon, hopefully by Sonja Fillingham, wife of Pat Fillingham, the Chipmunk test pilot. Everybody gets a vote. Sonja & Pat won the 1952 King’s Cup Air Race together in one of the prototype Chipmunks (G-AKDN), which is still flying today.

The de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Trust and The Chipmunk Club will both have stands there.

All Chipmunk owners, pilots, engineers, veterans, enthusiasts and their friends and families are welcome.

The Duxford clash is most unfortunate.

The date of our event was chosen by de Havilland 65 years ago.

22nd May was the actual date of the first Chipmunk flight.

The black and white aircraft photo on Panshanger’s advertising is one of the prototypes and is still flying today.

Absolutely Wyvernfan. You will need to buy membership on entry and that is only £10 and you’ll get a discount in the cafe and all the other benefits.

Bill Purchase is bringing Dave Gill from the CATW journey and there may possibly be one or two others from the trip there. The current owner of WP833 has been invited and he will be mentioned in the presentation as he has a good story of his own.

Sadly, Bill does not have any copies of his book for sale, so if anyone, private or retailer, wants to take advantage of this great opportunity and sell some there, they will be very welcome. Please let me know.

Small world, I was an engineer on 7 AEF in 1980-81.

By the way, just to follow up on my earlier message about the 50th birthday bash, having checked the records we actually managed 42 Chippies over the two days. It would have been well over 50 as the Army’s original plan was to fly-in en masse with about 12 aircraft, but a bean-counter got in the way.

I hope I can make it to Panshanger.

Good to see that Bill Purchase is still around. Spent many an hour at RAF Newton with 7AEF flying the good old Chippie with the ATC. Even got involved in his ‘Chippie’s around the World’ event.

Might try and attend, but by car I’m afraid 😎

Bravo533. Please can you let Sue at Panshanger (01707 391 791) have your type and registration asap. All aircraft are welcome, so no need to apologise. 🙂
Looking forward to seeing you there.

We’ll be flying in to the event from York – not in a Chippie I’m afraid but we are both ex-Chippie pilots:)

Yes, we had one SuperMunk, one of the BBMF pair, and three from the Army at Middle Wallop. Are you getting any from overseas? We had one from Germany that took the concours prize.

Our gathering was held at Wellesbourne Mountford.

Ooh. That is a good target to beat. Did you have the SuperMunks there too? Where was that held?

Excellent; the very best of luck from the organiser of the Chipmunk’s 50th birthday party. If I remember correctly, we managed about 35 or so.
