Chipmunk colour scheme for WP784

Chipmunk colour scheme for WP784 at the Aeropark

We are currently looking at the colour scheme for our Chipmunk, it was we believe based at Swinderby and Castle Bromwich in the 1950,s. Can anyone confirm this and the dates and also the marking it carried. There are photos in Air Britain Summer 1996 page 52 of WP782 at Castle Bromwich coded E. We are looking at silver with yellow bands at the moment.

The aircraft would have been delivered in yellow T bands ,this scheme ran to about mid-1959 when the dayglo paint appeared ,this covered the cowling, wingtips, the rear fuselage and tailplanes. Rarely were control surfaces painted for fear of upsetting the control balance due to the extra weight of paint.Around 1962 the strips of dayglo started to appear on natural metal ,light grey appearing from 1966.

WP784 was delivered to the RAF on 18.6.52 and served with 17 Reserve Flying School at Hornchurch,5 Reserve Flying School at Castle Bromwich,Air Attache,Paris,Queens University Air Squadron at Sydenham,Manchester University Air Squadron Woodvale,8 FTS at Swinderby,Aberdeen UAS Dyce,Leeds UAS Church Fenton. The book “Aviation in Birmingham” by Geoffrey Negus and Tommy Staddon,Midland Counties Publications 1984 has a list of No 5 Reserve Flying School aircraft . WP784 is shown as coded “E”. The RAF Museum archives will hold the record card for this aircraft and may be able to help with AP Manuals for the paint scheme . Scale Aircraft Modelling Vol 13 No 9 June 1991 has many side profiles of all the RAF Chipmunk schemes.
