I remember seeing this Chippie at Elstree in the mid 70`s parked with the long term residents on the back row. I had heard it got exported to the States shortly thereafter, it always struck me as one of the best looking Chipmunks i had seen. Does anyone know it`s current state or have any recent pictures?………Martin

An interesting relic though I am not sure I would trust the medicine after all this time. !
It would be neat if you could reunite it with the airframe, wherever it is…
Thanks for posting.

My uncle owned a Chipmunk in the USA quite a long time ago. He ended up selling. I am still looking for a photo with the registration. I don’t believe it was the same as G-AOTM.
My uncle passed away in a landing accident in his T-6 Texan in 2010. I ended up with a lot of his stuff. Something I just found was a first aid kit for a raft onboard an airplane. It’s marked G-AOTM hence posting on this forum.

It’ll take more than a post to communicate with Willip26 now.

Willip -It was Chipmunk G-ARFW ! Sorry for the wait!

Bob Mitchell sold G-APOY to Norway and has probably regretted it ever since!

Its called a Bristol Tourer -there is another example G-APOY in storage in Norway.
Picture of G-APOY in its heyday – any idea of the circumstances behind it ending up in Norway or indeed of the identity of the mysterious third machine apparently lost in France?
Wicked Willip :diablo:

G-ATTS was powered by the Rover TP90 (turbo Prop 90 hp – actually produced 100 bhp) Wolston, a gas turbine developed from the good old 1S60 auxilary motor, and the motor car gas turbine engines.
Originally it was WP895, but suffered a landing accident while with the Southampton UAS, It was modified by Hants and Sussex Aviation in early 1966 with the turbine engine.
Seems a shame that the engine and the idea of a parrafin burning Chipmunk didn’t go further.

Sorry I was thinking wrong Chipmunk ! Its G-ATTS the Rover Chipmunk exported to the USA in the mid 1970’s !

G-APTS was sold to Australia in 1994 as VH-ZIZ and is still airworthy there.

Rover Turbine
Slightly off topic, but this was at the 1966 Farnborough airshow.
on my large format original, the sign says Rover Turbine Chipmunk.
Anybody know anything about it?

Rightly or wrongly I thought they were known as Bristol Tourer as well 🙂

Chipmunk G-AOTM (Bristol aero conversion)
I photographed this aircraft at a Fly-in at Elstree in 1960 presumably not long after the conversion had taken place it would seem that year.

Lion Rock – the Chipmunk G-AOTM was Sir Peter Masefield’s machine. Two others were built -one crashing in France .
By: Newforest - 6th February 2013 at 13:31
Guess you’re right! I was thinking you were wrong because I thought the ‘Masefield’ had a more rounded canopy, but I think now that is propably the ‘Super Chipmunk’ in the US. Details of Peter Masefield in the article below.

Whilst it is called a Bristol Aero Conversion I always believed its nickname was the “Masefield Tourer” as the mods were designed by Sir Peter Masefield when he was MD of Bristol Aero Company, indeed I beklive he had one as a runabout to commute to/from Filton!

re Dr Smith’s post yesterday and the attached Terry Clarke Collection photo
(G-AOTM: DHC-1 Chipmunk 22A, To N65312 1976), taken at Wisley 15-9-57, )
Two questions just for personal interest….
Was this Chipmunk one of a pair purchased ex RAF by Universal Air Services Ltd around 1954 that languished for a couple of years or so in the then main hangar at Fairoaks?
The photo date of 15-9-57 was this the date and occasion of the first Royal Aeronautical Garden Party held at Wisley? If so I was there and I suspect the year could have been 1956 not ’57.
If I am correct, it was also supposed to be the first occasion when Jeffrey Quill and Bill Bedford first performed their popular tight display around the airfield perimeter tail chase sequences in Spitfire AB910 and Hurricane
G-AMAU!
That was and remains a terrific show that still stands up well by comparison with some of today’s remarkable events.
