They are Lycoming, I think 0360, I should know really I fly them! We had another G-BDCC ex Boscombe but that got w/o about 10 years ago. Also still at Hus Bos is my old a/c WP809 (G-BVTX) which retains the RN colours, that was never converted. The reason for the bigger engine is they are used as glider tugs.

I was driving near High Wycombe today and saw a red and white aircraft about half a mile away which at first I was sure was a Chipmunk in the old RAF red a white scheme but as it got closer I was sorely disappointed to find it wasn’t. 🙁

Is there a Chipmunk operating out of Boscombe Down? I was walking around the perimetre fence earlier and saw what looked like a tail dragger taxiing wearing the old red and white RAF colour scheme. Unfortunately is was difficult to positively identify as was 3/4 mile away!

All these were taken on a day when I flew a beech 19a musketeer in formation with G-BBND and a pitts special on a photography flight..No inflight pics from me as I was the pilot of the musketeer.

Here’s a few more from me. My first flight in the Air Cadets was in a Chipmunk from RAF Leeming in the early 1980’s.

Some more Irish Chipmunk shots
First glimpse of the ‘new’ Chippy:

Side slipping the last few meters to the grass runway:

Taxi back to the hangar:

Tara ‘on guard’ duty:

As the weather was superb, it was decided to organise another aircraft to get some airborne shots. A wee Kis sports aircraft, complete with competent photo pilot, was available and after a brief, off we went:

Once complete, we landed and I headed back out to the runway in time to catch the Chipmunk returning:

It was great to back back outside, in good company, playing with aircraft, banter, cleaning, and a bit of flying. Happy days indeed!
