Chipmunk WP927 (G-ATJK)

Hi all,

I’ve been trying without much success to find some pictures of the above aircraft when in service. XM692 has kindly supplied me with a pic of her at Detling and one of her in civilian guise at Hamble, I’ve tried all the usual places (DGH, Air Britain, Airliners and Bill Fisher) with no result. I’m therefore hoping that someone out there might have a picture in their collection which might help me. Also if anyone has any recollection of having flown in her it would be nice to hear from you.

Here is a potted history of her:6 Jan 53 – Delivered to 9 MU Cosford
11 June 54 – Transferred to 22 M.U. Silloth
12 Apr 55 – Issued to RAF Detling (Probably Stn Flt.for Summer Camp use)
12 Oct 55 – Returned to storage at 20 MU Aston Down
May 56 – Issued to London UAS (Probably for Summer Camp use)
5 Sep 56 – Returned to storage at 10 MU Hullavington
19 May 57 – Transferred to No. 5 MU Kemble
28 May 57 – Issued to Oxford UAS, Coded N (Probably for Summer Camp use)
29 Aug 57 – Returned to storage at 10 MU Hullavington
18 June 58 – Issued to RAF Northolt, (Probably Stn. Flt. for Summer Camp use)
3 Nov 58 – Transferred to No. 5 MU Kemble
15 Sep 65 – Transferred to 27 MU Shawbury, for Hamble College of Air Training
21 Sep 65 – Registered G-ATJK to College of Air Training Ltd., Hamble
6 Mar 68 – Returned to 27 MU Shawbury for storage
30 June 72 – Transferred to Non Effective Stock, and subjected to spares recovery
24 Oct 72 – Transferred to RAF Woodvale (10 AEF) as Pax Trainer 8612M
By 1975 had moved to No. 1128 Sqn., ATC, Crosby, Merseyside
By March 1986 had transferred to 247 (Ashton under Lyne ) Sqn ATC

Many thanks to Chris for providing me with a cracking photo of 927 in civilian clothing:cool:

It’s well worth going to his ABPic album too for some varied photos 😀

I have a picture of ‘TJK taken at Plymouth on 3rd January 1967, which will shortly be uploaded to ABPIC (www.abpic.co.uk). The original slide was badly damaged by fungus etc so it has taken a while to return the image to a viewable condition! If you would like a copy please contact me at chrisengland37@gmail.com, and I will send it to you.

Cor, I’m sure John will be in touch pdq! 😀

John,

Transport photo’s are searchable on line certainly, but don’t give up with Brian Pickering. Many photo’s/slides/negatives are loaned for a short period, so any monthly list you may see online is out of date very soon. Best thing is to ring and ask, he’ll then check his system.

He found me over a dozen photo’s of XM695 and XV806 that weren’t listed anywhere…. great stuff !!!
