Chippe Harvard Oxford Dove formation photo

A portion from a recently acquired 1950s press photo, showing a slightly unusual formation flying over Windsor.

Chippie, Harvard, Oxford and a Dove, anyone know what the occasion was, or unit that the ‘flight’ came from??

Thanks in anticipation, Chumpy.

Hello Ian,

Only guessing but used as an advanced trainer to gain experience handling and operating a heavier aircraft in preparing pilots for Flying Training School, and creaming off exceptional students for instructor training. The London UAS operated three XF909,913 and 914 . Also Provosts used by Glasgow,Cambridge ,Queens,Manchester UAS .

The 2nd photo is London University Air Squadron. HRH Duke of Edinburgh went solo in Harvard KF729 of the Home Command Examining Unit at White Waltham.

Moving a little away from from the thread subject, I’ve had the attached photo for sometime now and always wondered why the formation was made?

Better call the Dove a Devon, as it is RAF.

Just a guess, but there’s a good chance that they would have taken off from nearby RAF White Waltham where the Duke learnt to fly in 1953.

During my time there in the 1960’s, RAF Anson, Chipmunk and Pembroke aircraft were resident.

Formation

Pretty sure that i read somewhere previously this was connected to HRH The Duke Of Edinburgh. Possibly types that he had flown, even the actual aircraft, happy to be corrected if not the case.
