Here’s some good news for chocolate lovers. Researchers say those sweet treats contain large quantities of natural antioxidants which help product us against cardiovascular disease.
Antioxidants are also known as flavonoids and there are hundreds of these compounds in chocolate and cocoa powder, according to a report in Science News Online.
I guess this means chocolate – often thought of as a junk food – could become the next health food fad, but only if manufacturers don’t remove the flavonoids when making candy. One company, Mars Inc., knows a good thing, and has developed a proprietary process to preserve these flavonoids. Soon they will label candy made with this process, to let consumers know the compounds are present.
To gain credibility for the health benefits of chocolate, candy companies and the American Cocoa Research Institute are pumping money into studies, some of which were presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Here’s an interesting fact. The researchers say a 40-gram serving of milk chocolate contains about the same amount of flavonoids as a glass of red wine, approximately 400 milligrams. Dark chocolate is really healthy, containing nearly 800 milligrams of flavonoids, or about the same amount as a cup of black tea.
In one study, researchers found flavonoids in chocolate were also more potent than those found in many vitamins, including ascorbic acid.
While there are some 4,000 known flavonoids in plant products, there is one family of the antioxidants prevalent in chocolate – procyanidins, which work to relax the inner surface of blood vessels by increasing nitric oxide concentrations.
So, the next time you bite into a chocolate bar, you can feel good about eating something that not only tastes great but is beneficial to your health.

Are you really objective Comet ? 🙂 😉
Always! 🙂 Even a objective belgian person must simply admit that Belgian chocolate is the best. 😉 So the Belgian beer expert of this forum just did the same.
Thanks for that.

~ROFL @ Stieglitz’s “funny man” comment to Anna~ 😀 😀 😀
Personally…I would rather have a savoury nibble rather than chocolate…chocolate’s overrated in my opinion (not that you’d think it from the size of my a**** :D) But if I had to choose, I’d chose Belgian. The Swiss stuff is too sickly.

I had a Belgian Shepherd once, we had to get rid of it because it had a serious temperament defect (known as rage syndrome) where the dog will suddenly attack with no warning. It used to squeeze itself into dark corners and just sit there growling at nothing. There are some irresponsible breeders of this type here in the UK. I can only suggest to anyone on here who may want one of these dogs, do not buy one from a British breeder.

Yesterday I saw a documentary on our newest export product. The Belgian Sheppard (it’s actually from Mechelen/Malines). This dog is smaller, faster, lives longer (aprox age 16) and is above all smarter than his German cousin! Apart from drugs, he can easily detect explosives. Pups are being trained now for the American special forces and the IDF.
Price tag : 5000 Euro’s for the basic version. A dog trained for anti-terrorism operations will cost about 50 000 Euro’s! (a bit too expensive to buy for a weekly walk in the park)
Rumsfeld may be laughing about the Belgian troops, it was Chicko, a dog specially trained for the armed forces, who saved the American ambassador’s life in Kabul.

I totally agree. Every time I go to Ghent , I don’t miss to stop at the chocolate store.

Good point Hand 😀 But I am no fan of Swiss chocolate, ever since Nestle took over Rowntrees in York they had to interfere with the established types of chocolate to make them more “Swiss”, so now we have Smarties which are tasteless to name an example.
And Belgian chocolates are a work of art! The chocolate shops always have beautiful window displays and they certainly know how to present them to their best ability. Okay, so some is done for the tourists, like in Brugge, but it doesn’t stop them being artistic. I once saw a nice chocolate shaped like a Duvel bottle with the label on in different coloured sweets.

I wouldn’t even mention Swiss “chocolate” in the same sentence as a certain other country’s superior product! So I will say that Belgian chocolate is the best in the WORLD!!! As my Mum says, Swiss “chocolate” is akin to eating candle fat (ie tasteless and who the hell would want to eat candlefat, like who in their right mind would eat Swiss “chocolate”!)
And some people will never forget the damage done by bloody Swissair, so why the hell should we buy their products??!!?
And in five days I can eat all the Belgian chocolate I want!!!

I’m suffering myself of a severe addiction to chocolate.
Fortunately I’m living in the French CApital of Chocolat it helps , since many little shops of chocolate makers can be found in town.

Chocolate is not a typically Belgian product. It’s like our beer and our fries, we do know how to make it, but we did not ‘invent’ it. I’m very fond of chocolat myself. The best brand is actually Callebout, not Cote d’Or (which tastes like old socks to be honest). One nice thing about Belgian law is that it prohibits company’s to sell products under the name chocolat if it doesn’t contain a certain amount of cacao!!Good chocolat should taste bitter and not sweet.
But don’t feel obliged to buy Belgian chocolat to support that poor little brave country, most company’s are now working for Kraft Foods or Nestlé anyway 😉

Some of you may be familiar that when the Spanish arrived in Mexico, they discovered that Chocolate was the drink of kings. When I lived in Oaxaca which has a large purportion of native Mexican people, hot chocolatle is still a traditional after dinner drink, just ground cocoa beans with water and slightly sweetened. No milk involved at all. In ancient times they used a little honey to sweeten, but now they use sugar and also add a little cinnemon. You can go to chocolate mills in downtown Oaxaca and buy bars of chocolate that all have been freshly ground on site, not great to eat as the sugar grains are not disolved and the chocolate becomes very hard after being ground to a paste, they are only meant for hot chocolate.
As for modern eating chocolate, you have to be carefull as many brands use alot of tropical/vegetable oils and artificial flavors to replace cocoa. In the supermarket near me, they sell a Belgian brand of chocolate bar called Jacques which I like.

Definately Belgium. That light Swiss poo-coloured dung from purple cows… yuk!
