Christchurch Aerodrome 1926-1970

The first version of my first PDF book “Christchurch Aerodrome 1926-1970”
(207 pages, 290 photos)is now available as a free download at….

http://www.hampshireairfields.co.uk/xchbook/9apr.pdf

There are still some rough edges but I thought it better to let the thing loose
on the world than be forever tidying.
If you can make any additions…or corrections , you will find my eMail address
in the file (several times).

Whilst the information is largely based on that on my Hampshire Airfields
website’s Christchurch pages, there are additional photographs and it is laid
out in an easier to read manner.

A Kindle/Ipad version is available at Amazon …but due to Amazon’s pricing policies you will have to pay £1.57 for it (any profits will go to the Animals in Distress at Torquay.)

I visited Peter’s Maycrete hut many times in the 1970s and early 80s. Access was via a locked gate off Matchams Lane and would seem to be off what is now Mountbatten Drive, but a scan of Google Earth isn’t throwing up anything I recognise.

IIRC the Bf-109 was for many years in a shed at Hurn somewhere in the area between 17 and 26.

That was my understanding too: however despite a few attempts to find the shed, we never succeeded. I was over there a few weeks ago and I now think the shed (a Maycrete WWII hut I think) was over on the BAC side of 17/35.

Hi Kev
I’ll have a look at my fathers photos he worked for de Havilland’s in the late 50’s and early 60’s we lived at Barton-on-sea he was also an avid photographer.

That would be good.I wonder if he took any pictures pre-delivery of the various foreign Vampires.

Cracking job: obviously a great deal of research gone into these, and some really evocative photos in there too.

Yes…..you are quite right! Doh. Too early in the morning and too little coffee. 🙁

However, whilst you can forget much of what I said there is still relevance regarding Peter Foote. This whole area was his stamping ground from the 1940s onwards and I’m sure there will be material in his archive about Christchurch. I’d be surprised if not.

Have you not accessed the archive of the late Peter Foote? He lived close-by, worked there for British Aerospace well into the late 1970s (possibly later?) and kept his Me.109-E there. He was a prolific note taker and photographer.

Peter Foote’s Bf.109 was kept at Hurn rather than Christchurch. IIRC it’s the one displayed now at Duxford in a ‘crash’ vignette.
