All that g leaming brasswork, pelting steam, pistons, noise, smell and fury.
I love it.
The steam engines on the paddle steamer Waverley are similarly fascinating.
Many times Ive been on a cruise down the Clyde and just stood there watching those massive triple expansion engines doing their work. Its like a living thing, and if you could bottle that smell of hot boiler oil that wafts up, I’d buy some.

Love York railway Museum. I believe a brand new Evening Star (Standard?) class engine is being built from scratch, but incorporating modern safety devices, which should be something to see. Many fond memories when I were a lad at Bressingham Steam Museum in Norfolk on the “Oliver Cromwell” and “Flying Scot”. Obviously Mallard and other Gresley engines are wonderful and I love watching “Night Mail”, which I managed to tape from the TV some years ago.

So Anna, in answer to your question, I guess the answer is yes! Like anything old – cars, trains and especially ‘planes as long as they are British!

Now that would hurt if you got the gearing wrong.

He’d probably have known my late Granddad then, he was on it too apparently, late thirties. I’m not into trains as such, but it’s an impressive piece of machinery. Always makes my dad go misty eyed when he sees big steam engines; we put him on a steam driving course for his birthday last year, he became a kid again for the day. 🙂
