The recent spate of Tristar pics has had me thinking. At what point does an airliner, or any other aircraft for that matter, become a ‘classic’?
And does a relatively low production run ensure ‘classic’ status. both the Tristar and DC10 didn’t really sell, compared to Boeing.
The B747 is still in productoin, yet we call the early series classic. Same goes for the 737-200.
Or does it become a classic when it ceases its production run?

I would say that the 757’s are on the verge of becoming classics. Beuatiful aircraft that are loved by all (if not, most) and are going to be slowly brought out of service and broken up in the years to come.

Quite right, I believe that three or four new 154Ms were delivered to Govt agencies within Russia. Funny, but when I first got into aviation in 1979 no one had a good word to say about Soviet types…..how times change:D

Absolutely! I passed through Moscow Sheremetyevo and Murmansk airposts over the weekend and it’s such an amazing sight to see lines of TU-154’s, then lines of IL-86’s in a row behind them… Then lots of TU-134’s and IL-62’s dotted around the place. Truely awesome aircraft!

My classics would be original Boeings like 707,727, 737 and 747 probably not beyond 200 series…
DC8, DC-9, DC-10
Tristar
Airbus is still a bit new but maybe the original A300 would count.
Also things like Tridents, Bac 1-11’s Viscounts, HS748’s, certain Soviet types from the 60’s and 70’s too…
Did I mention Concorde ? 😀
