Ju-Air, the operators of the three ex Swiss AF Ju 52/3m, have been so succesful with their operation that they acquired a CASA 352 in Germany some years ago and put BMW-engines on it to join their fleet as HB-HOY. These aircraft are frequently seen in Switzerland, Austria and South Germany during the summer and I photographed it taking off with joyriders from Germany’s largest vintage aircraft meeting at the Hahnweide (east of Stuttgart) in September 2001.
Another Swiss operator is Classic Air with two DC-3’s. I caught HB-ISB taking off from Mollis on 24.08.2002.

Thanks for those Kenneth, that Dc-3 pic is magnificant! It’s good to see a Ju52 still being flown with authentic engines, the recently restored CAF example has gone the same way as the Lufthansa machine and has had P&W’s fitted with three-blade props.Tante Ju’s always look better with thier original engines and two blade props,so here’s hoping the P&W conversions don’t become too popular!

Yes, they did in fact; either in the form of licence-built P&W Hornets or their own BMW 132. As a matter of interest, Lufthansa’s well-known Ju 52 “D-AQUI” is equipped with P&W R-1340 (as in the Harvard) as well as three-bladed propellers and some rather ugly mufflers as a result of noise complaints from the airports where they train their crew. I see this and the Swiss Ju 52s several times each year where I live and they sound very different too.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-02-03 AT 06:51 PM (GMT)]Great pics Kenneth, as usual. I couldn’t help notice the BMW badge on the Junker’s engines. Didn’t know that BMW built the engines for the Junkers!?!
