Hi Alex,
Great shots, like the shot of the Fox a lot.
Just wondered if you had any of the Dom, Dragonfly, and Fox together or the two twins together (truthfully anything would be nice).

Wonderful stuff, what was the camera ship?
A Birddog for them all, except the P-51 which was shot from a Yak-52

I actually received a mail about one of your posts on the Mustang board a month or so ago.

The Warbirds P51D was painted by an RNZAF team, including me, in a temporary scheme to make an advert for Singapore’s “Tiger Beer”. During an airshow at Wigram just before filming they flew it in wet weather against our advice, and little bits of the mask paint job began to chip away in the wet. It was fine for the best part and the advert was successfully made, but fleks of paint apparently got into the radiator (so we were later told) and the engine blew. It was stranded at Queenstown for some time.
The story and my exclusive photos of the paint job are here

Great photos indeed…more of the P-51 please! Actually more of them all would be great. A question for Dave Homewood: what is the story behind the 1993 blown engine on the Mustang? Which temoprary scheme was that…and any photos?

Is that colour scheme on the P51D a wartime RAF one? Or postwar? It seems familar, I think Dad had a 1/72nd scale model in that scheme when I was a kid.
Dave, you may be thinking of the recent Corgi 1/72 model of the Mustang, an example of which I have on top of my PC as I type. Looks excellent in the basic silver with checkerboard markings. Great pictures of what appears to have been an excellent show.
The paint scheme is late WWII I think. Swiss Mustangs might have more details about this one. The kit was a 1/72 Matchbox P-51D. I had it in the mid 80s. It had Matchbox usual trademark of two colors on the plastic. Fuselage was green while wings were grey. Even earlier the kit’s fuselage came in red plastic!

I think Carl Swanson built a Halberstadt replica in the 1980s… could this be that aircraft?
By: DazDaMan - 28th March 2005 at 12:19
A Halberstadt DIV replica. Does anyone knowwhere it was built.
Septic.
Great photos – always love seeing the Triplane formations 🙂
Wasn’t the Halberstadt built by Frank Ryder, or at least once owned by his museum? I seem to recall an article on it in Aeroplane once.

Thanks Dave.

The airshow had a French theme this time, there was a Moulin Rouge dinner evening on the Saturday night, a large Eiffel tower and the Arc de Triomphe were built and a lot of people wearing costume. The Cat was displayed with temporary French markings

Superb photo’s
Whats the story behind the Catalina’s new colours?
I was lucky enough to fly in her out of Wanaka last year, and have tried to keep track of her ever since, but I didn’t know she was now in French colours.

I’m unsure where it was built but there’s more on the plane here

Bad weather…
true, but sometimes clouds make a wonderful background and make pictures more vibrant! The one with the SE5A looks like a painting!

I’m sure the farmers round there don’t consider the impending rain too bad – not sure about the vintners though. Did it actually rain on the Saturday or Sunday? I heard it only rained Friday.
Dave
It rained hard on Friday morning, but was fine in the arvo and quite warm. Sat. was beautifully fine till lunch, then a shower, but not bad again later. Sat night poured down. Sunday cloudy all day, a little drizzle. And to think we have had no rain for two months previous !
Today was absolutely gorgeous all day…airshow weather
