😎 Being the true aviation nut that I am I live right underneath the flightpath of Baginton airport (coventry to anyone else). I just got back from work today and low and behold what is on final? Only one of Air Atlantique’s DC-6’s, G-APSA. Does anyone have any information about what is happening with Air Atlantique’s DC-6 fleet? I’d love to know what these gently giants are up to!

…………….and as Bruce’s Dad I can confirm the story, but don’t panic TT you and I are also not related

[QUOTE=’lectra;1134248]I suspect your Dad was right TT.
It may even have been the long standing BFS-CVT route which is still operated today, although these days it’s four tuboprops…

Thanks Bruce – was worried there that Alan had been spun the same yarn by his Dad as my Dad told me….and not believing in coincidences thought we might be related! :p

Wasps, Double or Major; Mr Wright or corncob: putting the academic debate aside, amen for a bunch like Classic Flight who put their money where our mouth is. I’ll certainly be off to Blenheim to see G-APSA on her first public outing.
Has anyone here put their name down for that trip to Hamburg? Apparently pax aboard the DC-3 will be flying alongside a formation practice involving G-APSA, a DC-2 and two other DC-3s! Unmissable and only 300 quid. Now where’s that piggy bank…

Surviving Big Pistons
RamboII,
How many still flying? If we look at R-2800’s, I guess heaps if you include the overall warbird community and those fabulous Alaskan fish carriers.
The “flagship” of the R-3350’s would have to be the Martin Mars [with yet another life-extension…yippee!!:D ], followed closely by the 3 regularly flown L-1049’s and every Skyraider around [have a listen at Legends! 😎 ]
IF the R-4360 were of greater HP than the R-3350 in their “ultimate” production [and indeed you might beat the CW product by a couple of hundred], then I might concede, BUT if even if we count the odd Reno racer, the only flyable R-4360 equipped machine I can think of resides at Long Island [or is it still earth-bound in NJ?] and is still under restoration.
Perhaps a shade hasty on my part, but it’s just spine tingling to listen to the idle of a -3350 as much as the roar on takeoff; inside or outside the aircraft.
G’day 😉

Possible help with a mythbust here – for years when I was a kid, there was the drone of a multi engined radial over our house at 11pm on the dot- my Dad always said it was the mailplane – a DC-6 based at Coventry…was he right or is this a myth (if the latter, its 2-0 as I now know there’s no Father Christmas… 🙂 )
TT
More than likely TT, she used to fly over me at BHX too !
I was only talking to the big man last week he was asking how well the children were behaving……..;)

The jet flights were to be available as part of the classic flight club membership but the CAA came calling.

It would be worth a week’s holliers to travel over for a ride in one of them! And better value than a week on a beach for a redhead like me!

I’ll take your big P&W radials and raise you an R-3350. Nothing quite beats that!!

Hi Curlyboy
That’ll be APSA again. They were off to Cranfield for training.
The DC-3 was more than likley AMPY en-route to Southend for one of our regular flights on behalf of Leger Holidays.
Tom.
I was just about to ask whos DC3 buzzed my garden very nice site it was too, any news of flights out of Southend yet?

Would love to fly in a DC-6, does this aircraft do pleasure flights similar to the rest of the fleet???
In addition I remember sometime last year pleasure flights being advertised in the Vampire T11 and Meteor, I think for £500 and £1,000 respectively. Are these also avialable, just that I haven’t seen them advertised of late?
The DC6 is currently fitted out as a freighter. In the future she maybe fitted out to passenger spec again but it all depends on sponsorship, etc.

Now there’s a thought the DC-6 at legends.
She would be eligible wouldnt she????
Is -APSA the DC-6 with the possible CIA background or is that -SIXC?

I shall have to get up to Baginton’s peri fence with my camera to see if I can catch sight (and sound) of her.
