Whats planes will always be remeber by enthusiasts in your country.
From an Irish point of view I would say the Aer Lingus 737-400/500s.They are little work horses operating on the longer Europeans routes and soon they will begin to dissapear. The little mean green machines have flown to all the corners of Europe and still they arnt finished. They will provide the forst link between Dublin and Warsaw and also a new Aer Lingus service to Dubrovnik.
The Ryanair 737-200s introduced in 1993 have flown 1000s of flight between Ireland and the UK amking Irish commercial aviation what it is today a very commpetitive market.
Across Europe there is planet more BA concordes,Iberias 727 which I had the pleasure of flying on Alitalia 747 and many more.
Id like to know which planes you will remeber for years to comes even after they have been retired.

Comet – first jet airliner, had all the problems of being ‘a first’ but the solutions to which have benefited aviation ever since
Or a second. Wasn’t the Avro Avroliner the first jet airliner? Comet get’s first IN SERVICE I believe.

Many years ago, when the family lived on the Shetland Islands, we used to fly a lot (Father worked for BA). Did about 6 trips (each trip consisted of four legs LSI-ABZ-LHR then LHR-ABZ-LSI) in a 3 year period. (1980 – 1983). All of them on standby tickets and not once did we get bumped (there were 6 of us!!!).
HS748s between Sumburgh and Aberdeen, then usually Tridents or 1-11’s between Aberdeen and Heathrow.
Back then the 737-200 (advanced) was relatively new and on a couple of occasions it was a bright and shiny 737-200 on ABZ-LHR, some of them were in British Airtours colours.
My last flight on a Trident was back in Jan/Feb 83. While we were waiting for check-in, a member of BA ground staff came up to us, to point out one of the ‘new’ BA 757s – G-BIKA “Dover Castle”. I was only 7 and a half at the time, but for some strange reason remember it like yesterday. Always liked the 757’s in the classic BA colour scheme.
Ah those were the days………..sigh……..

classic or not im adding it
I don’t think this is a classic, just that the airline were operating a lot from my local and i thought i’d add it.

How about the Hawker Siddeley Trident? The first trijet and a British thoroughbred. First flight on 09Jan1962.

From Stansted, I miss the old EAL and Ryanair 1-11’s, and also the countless Tristars. I also really miss Air Uk as a whole, a great little airline. Such a shame they’re not still around, brilliant livery aswell. I remember one of my very first flights was on one of their F100’s to CDG.

The Viscount was the first turboprop in airline service. My favourite airliner, I have fond memories of them going over the house on approach to Renfrew Airport.

aircraft & airline combo’s that will be long remembered include
Concorde / BA
Comet / Dan Air
Hp Herald / Air UK
VC10 / British United
Viscount / BEA
Bac 1-11 / BA/ Dan Air/ Laker / BCal
The above airlines were operators of the types but the common factor is that they were of British design and manufacture apart from Concorde where the french provided the garlic for the meals 😉
It is a sad indication of the state of british industry when you think of what we could produce 40 years ago and compare it to what we produce now.
Concorde – probably the most graceful aircraft on the planet
Comet – first jet airliner, had all the problems of being ‘a first’ but the solutions to which have benefited aviation ever since
Herald / Viscount – first turboprop airliners (i think)
VC10 – another great design from Vickers, looked good and flew even better according to those who did. Popular with passengers but as it was designed for ‘hot & high’ destinations was not the most economical.
Bac1-11 – possibly the one aircraft certainly in the UK that helped the package holiday market literally take off.

Yes, and I was wrong above when writing there were 17 F28′ s in service. There were 17 F28-4000 and 3 F28-1000 in total.
There is a brilliant Swedish site about Linjeflyg but for those of you not familiar with this strange language I recommend this page for a brief history of Linjeflyg (1957-1992).

Here in the UK no choice but to go for Concord. Although I do love the 747sp.

Lufthansa 727 and for DUS it will always be the LTU TriStars.
By: greekdude1 - 19th April 2004 at 08:07
In the U.S., I’d say Pan Am and to a slightly lesser extent, TWA 707’s and 747’s. Pan Am launched 747 service from JFK to LHR and they also launched 707 service from JFK to CDG.
