Climate Protesters Storm Aberdeen Runway

Here we go again with these idiots….

Breaking News8:14am UK, Tuesday March 03, 2009

A group of climate protesters are threatening to disrupt an airport after breaking through the perimeter fence and setting up a barricade on an aircraft taxiway.

Plane Stupid demonstrators cut Aberdeen airport fence

Plane Stupid said seven people had broken through Aberdeen Airport’s security fence and placed themselves inside a wire “fortress” on the tarmac.

Several other protesters climbed on to the roof of the terminal building, the group added.

Operator BAA said the activists were positioned on a helicopter taxiway on the east side of the airfield.

It was too early to say whether early flights would be disrupted, a company spokesman added, but passengers on early flights were being advised to check in as normal.

BAA said: “This action is dangerous and highly irresponsible, not least because Aberdeen is one of Europe’s busiest commercial heliports and a major transport centre for the north of Scotland, used by tens of thousands of people every day.”

Plane Stupid said the activists broke through the airport’s perimeter fence after 2am and were hoping to prevent the airport from reopening.

The group said it was protesting against the airport’s expansion plans and the resulting increase in greenhouse gas emissions.

The group added that the activists were dressed as golfers in the style of US property tycoon Donald Trump, who is planning to build a major international golf resort in the area and supports the expansion of the airport.

One of the protesters on the runway, Dan Glass, 25, from Glasgow, said: “There are seven of us here who are fenced in.

“We’re here to say the expansion cannot happen, and our generation won’t let it happen.”

In December last year Plane Stupid activists caused major disruption at Stansted airport in Essex after occupying part of the runway.

Watch it Renfrew!!! :dev2:

Their “manoeuvres” started about 0330hrs, yet police decided on the softly softly approach rather than turn the water cannons or machine guns on them…pity.

One came from the area, the rest had travelled up from the Central Belt. They must have been recently paid their giros….

They obviously had no sense, as they blocked the easternmost heli taxiway, only used by Bond & the occasional fixed wing movement. Had they known where the main runway was & blocked that, then the delays could have been worse. So much for their planning!

However they DID delay an Ambulance flight, & that is particularly Plane Stupid.

I think the “Ninny Nine” appeared in Court yesterday.

A PS protestor was the one that slimed the slimeball Mandelson. So they’re not all bad then! 😀

I would have no sympathy what so ever if one of the potheads got sucked into jet engine.

I think the airlines should collectively make a stand and add these people to their passenger blacklists.

Too right! This makes my blood boil. I’m all for freedom of speech….but there get’s to a stage…

Why do they always cover their faces?

‘Cos they’re really ugly! 😉

I think it would be interesting to know who they are in terms of background, are they students? I went to a very non-political university, and know that some are more active in this respect, but I didn’t think students did this sort of thing anymore?

If they’re not students then where does their money come from? Do they work, but every so often book a day or two off to go and protest?

If they are being funded by ‘mummy and daddy’ then I’d doubt they’d pick aviation because most of them will like their holidays to Barbados at xmas, or maybe that’s the reason they cover their faces, so that they can board a plane and travel business class when paid for by someone else.

I think the airlines should collectively make a stand and add these people to their passenger blacklists.

Well, the Southampton incident never made it onto the BBC news webpage, and this only got a small amount of coverage. If they do not get significant press coverage then these activities are fruitless, and clearly people just don’t care what they’re doing otherwise the press coverage would be greater.

Perhaps with less coverage they will quit protesting about aviation, go away and read up on the environment a little and start protesting about things which could really make a difference, such as cutting down the rainforests!

Never mind airport expansion, what about people expansion, stop having so many children and you won’t need airports to be expanded!:D
