Close Air Support More Organic Earlier in WWII?

I once heard / read that close air support may have been more organic before the latter stages of WWII but I can’t recall a reference. Would anyone have more information / insight?

I know that Rommel chose to unite his air assets but latter rued that this united air force, while more effective, tended to disregard CAS and focus on A2A combat.

I also know that the initial german offensives had stukas organic to various units.

Any insight, particularly with references would be greatly appreciated.
