Close up and personal at Middle Wallop 14 May

On Thursday 14 May the Museum of Army Flying at Middle Wallop is holding a repeat of last year’s ‘Meet the Pilot’s’ event. Its a chance to get close (not a barrier in sight) to the aircraft of the Army Historic flight and more modern machines of the Army Air Corps ( Last year the public got to sit in the cockpit of an Apache). There’s a range of pilot’s off all ages to talk to and there will also be a talk about the use of Apache helicopters in Libya by one of the pilot’s involved. Kick-off at 19:00.

Nice Sioux.

Next time you’re there, please ask aircrew of museum staff why they have that yellow horizontal line across the bubble. It seems to be unique to UK and a few Italian examples.
My guess is to act as a horizon line since the aircraft doesn’t have a typical cowl in front. Is it a MoD/Army or CAA requirement…or something added by Agusta?

Due to the light I didn’t get many full aircraft shots other than this one of the Sioux but plenty of close ups for modelling references.

Which green? and decal film showing.
Inside it was pilot’s stories and I learn’t how to shoot ducks from a Skeeter for the Mess and how a pilot got a medal having shot himself down on such a trip.

Colonel Nick Nicholls tells the audience how he ran over and killed a soldier with a Horsa glider on a night landing sortie. Apparently the Horsa had such a good suspension that the soldier thought the glider had stopped and got out whilst it was still moving .

As I understand it there is going to be a re-launch of the (Civilianised) Historic Aircraft Flight in July and there are proposals to have a special event in August to celebrate Middle Wallop’s part in the Battle of Britain.

Nice Beaver!

Sounds as though most of us missed a really interesting “do”.

It was a fun evening, allbeit a little damp outside. We were able to discuss the why’s and wherefors of the HAF’s Auster, Beaver, Soiux and Scout going on the civil register with their crew. Whilst inside the museum it was the personal stories of Army pilots from WW2 to the present day that held the attention of the public. Then there was the archavist telling the story of a 56 Sqn Observer’s last two years of WW1 with an interesting collection of personal artifacts ranging from trench art lighters through his leather flying jacket to an air gunnery course exam sheet.
