Closure of Bournemouth Aviation Museum (merged)

Just read this on another forum….

They have been given until the end of the year to move all aircraft to a new location. The current site is going to be ripped down and turned into a car park.

There has been another hanger offered, but the current occupants still haven’t been told either. The new site doesn’t have the opportunity to run live aircraft (no flight line access).

I still can’t believe they are closing you guys down! What is the future for the Bucc? Will it have a one off ferry flight somewhere?

Don’t worry Peter, the Buccaneer is staying at Bournemouth, but is moving to a new as yet undisclosed location on the airport, I’ll let you know more when I know more.

A Sad Day

Its a sad day at bournemouth aviation museum, we have been told
by the airport that we must be out of the hanger by the end of april.
so we are busy getting all of the exibits packed up ready to move somewhere.
two of the aircraft have gone so far, with the rest to follow soon.
we will keep up the hunt to find a new home.
some attached pictures of how the museum use to look.

There is an update on the Action Group link, dated February 4th, not looking good at the moment, the plans to store the aircraft outside has been turned down by the Airport Authorities.

Check out http://www.aviation-museum.co.uk/frameset.htm then click on Action Group in the top lefthand corner for more info.

closure of Bournemouth Aviation Museum

I am not sure what is happening about the museum, but a Jet Provost flew low over my house in Blandford Dorset today 05/02 could it have been from Bournemouth?

Its All Gone Rather Quiet

Does anyone know what is happening, there were updates coming thick and fast on the main Museum Website, but the last update was on January 18th?

I have a feeling we have been here before, a la Jet Age Museum, which is still trying to find a new home 8 years on.

The museum has stated that the alternative site offered is not suitable so I would guess BAM is no more.

I’ve offered to provide a home for some items – even just tempory loan! Its terrible that a popular musum has been forced to close its doors because of a third party (… well, land owner). BAM have been silent so far, so lets hope that they can work out what they are going to do. I’m sure we can all help in various ways until such time as they either find a new home or dissolve the collection.

Anyone heard anything at all from them?

Well if a home is needed for anything I do hope they get in touch!

Always sad to see a museum close, a real shame.

I thought they would be on some sort of agreed tenancy with a reasonble amount of notice required i.e 3 months.

In fairness to the trustees, I understand that they have been trying repeatedly to get the airport management to appreciate their predicament since being give notice to quit approximately three months ago. All to no avail. Some ‘big guns’ (local MP, County Councillors, etc.) have now been fully briefed on the situation and are trying to help the Museum as much as they can. Time will tell whether they are too late…..

I was over at Hurn yesterday with the wife and kids. Hard to believe that it may well have been our last ever visit.:(

Simple answer. The museum weren’t told about the closure (or, rather the non-renewal of its agreement to rent the hangar) until a few weeks ago.

The museum does have trustees. One of them has a helicopter business which operates from the same area.

Why has it had to become an issue so late in the day? Does the museum have trustee’s who could have made a little more of the predicament earlier in the year? Seems the wrong way to go about things at a time of year where everything is slowing down.

I’ve just seen this (below) posted elsewhere. I think this sums things up nicely:

Today is the day when the Bournemouth Aviation Museum closes its doors.

Not because of lack of volunteers.
Not because of lack of visitors.
Not because of lack of funds.
Not because of lack of enthusiasm for local aviation.
But because the airport authority doesn’t seem to care about the airport’s history.

Tragic.

The bad news is if we can’t move to the other hanger the collection
will have to be broken up which would be a shame.the volunteer’s have
put so much into the museum to make it what it is today. all that hard
work would be lost for good.plus the owners of the flying aircraft will
have to find new homes.

I feel so sad about this and I’m just a supporter of Bournemouth Aviation Museum. Heaven knows how the volunteers must be feeling right now – absolutely gutted I imagine. The impending closure of the Museum is nothing short of cultural vandalism.

How have things ended up like this? Manchester Airport Group who own Bournemouth Airport have much to answer for. It seems that the way in which they have treated Bournemouth Aviation Museum is in marked contrast to the excellent Manchester Airport Aviation Viewing Park where they continue to actively help and develop a first class museum.
